Chapter 4 - THE PROMISE I HAD NO RIGHT TO MAKE

The video from the gala went viral.

Of course it did.

Not the whole story.

Only the worst fifteen seconds.

Me, holding a champagne glass.

Noah barefoot.

My voice:

Heal my twins and I’ll adopt you.

People hated me.

They should have.

Some comments called Noah an angel.

Some called him a miracle worker.

That made me uncomfortable too.

Because turning a homeless child into a mystical symbol was another way of not seeing him.

I issued one public statement.

“I made a cruel and inappropriate remark to a child. I apologize without qualification. Any future relationship between Noah Reyes and my family will not be contingent on my children’s medical condition.”

My PR team hated it.

No excuse.

No context.

Good.

Then I went to the outreach center.

No cameras.

No gifts.

No lawyer.

No adoption papers.

Noah was drawing at a table.

I sat across from him.

“I need to say something.”

He continued drawing.

“You already said sorry.”

“I know.”

He looked up.

“I’m saying something different.”

I swallowed.

“When I said I’d adopt you if you healed Leo and Lila, I made a family sound like payment.”

He stared.

“That was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Children are efficient.

I almost laughed.

“I don’t know whether adoption is what you want.”

He shrugged.

“I don’t know either.”

“Good.”

He frowned.

“Good?”

“It means nobody decides today.”

He went back to drawing.

After a while, he asked:

“If they don’t walk, do you still want me around?”

There it was.

The consequence of my joke.

I hated myself for putting that question inside him.

“Yes.”

He stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because you’re Noah.”

He seemed suspicious.

“That’s it?”

“That should have been enough from the beginning.”

He looked down.

Then slid the drawing toward me.

Five stick figures.

Claire.

Me.

Leo.

Lila.

Noah standing slightly away from the others.

Not part of the family.

Not outside it either.

I did not comment.

May you like

Some things need time.
