Chapter 6 - The Father Who Signed Everything Away

My father requested a private meeting before his deposition.

I agreed only with Lydia present.

He arrived without a suit.

I had rarely seen him without one.

He looked smaller.

“Eleanor,” he began, “I made mistakes.”

“You committed fraud.”

His face tightened.

“I was trying to save the company.”

“You chose Arthur over your own controls.”

“I chose growth.”

“You chose your name on a larger building.”

He looked away.

That was the truth.

My father’s greatest fear was being remembered as the man who failed to expand what his father built.

Arthur recognized it.

He promised legacy.

Dad gave him access.

“What did you think would happen to me?” I asked.

“You would remain part of the family.”

“Without ownership?”

“You would still be secure.”

“Through your permission.”

“I am your father.”

“That is not a financial control.”

He became angry.

“You always spoke to me like an auditor.”

“Because every time I spoke like a daughter, you dismissed me as emotional.”

Silence followed.

He asked whether I intended to send him to prison.

“I don’t control sentencing.”

“You control what you say.”

“So did you when investigators asked whether I signed those documents.”

He lowered his head.

“I told them no.”

It was the first truthful decision he had made in months.

He agreed to plead guilty to fraud, false certification, and breach of fiduciary duty.

His cooperation helped recover assets.

It did not erase what he had done.

Before leaving, he said:

“I thought Sienna was easier.”

“She was.”

He looked surprised.

“Easier to control. Easier to flatter. Easier to use. You confused that with better.”

His eyes filled.

“I failed both of you.”

“Yes.”

I did not comfort him.

Not because I hated him.

May you like

Because truth deserved a moment without rescue.
