Chapter 5 - JAVIER COMES TO THE HOTEL

Javier arrived without permission.

Altavista security stopped him in the lobby.

Sofia almost refused to see him.

Then changed her mind.

Public lounge.

Security nearby.

No family.

Javier walked in wearing yesterday’s clothes.

He looked exhausted.

Good.

“Sofia.”

She said nothing.

He sat.

“Can we go somewhere private?”

“No.”

He looked around.

People were too far away to hear.

Still, he hated being visible.

Interesting.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

He paused.

Wrong.

“You need a list?”

He winced.

“For leaving you.”

“In the rain?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

“My family’s comments.”

“You read them.”

“Yes.”

“And did nothing.”

“I know.”

“Anything else?”

He rubbed his face.

“The loan.”

“Anything else?”

His head came up.

“How much do you know?”

There.

Not confession.

Inventory management.

Sofia almost smiled.

“Enough.”

Javier leaned forward.

“I never forged your signature.”

“Did Mariana?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you tell her I approved?”

“I told her you would approve.”

Different.

Still bad.

“Why?”

“Because I thought once you understood, you would.”

“Understand what?”

“That The Pines is all my family has.”

Sofia stared.

“That is not true.”

“What?”

“You have education. Careers. Teresa has retirement accounts. Mariana owns a condo. You have a job.”

“That’s not what I mean.”

“I know.”

She leaned forward.

“You mean The Pines is the symbol your family has decided matters more than anybody’s boundaries.”

Javier looked angry now.

“You don't understand heritage.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I understand exactly what it costs when people use heritage to justify bad decisions.”

He looked away.

Sofia continued.

“Did you know my trust owned the adjacent land?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Six months.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Mom said we needed the easement solved before refinance.”

“That doesn't answer.”

“I didn't want you involving Elena.”

“Why?”

“Because she would make it business.”

Sofia stared.

“It is business.”

“It’s family.”

“No.”

Her voice stayed calm.

“Using my land as part of your venue operations without telling me is business.”

He slammed his palm softly against the table.

“This is exactly why Mom doesn’t trust you.”

Sofia froze.

Javier realized it.

Too late.

She looked at him.

“Say that again.”

“I didn't mean—”

“No. Say it.”

He went silent.

“The woman who abandoned me in a storm because I was a stranger doesn’t trust me?”

Javier's shoulders dropped.

“Sofia.”

“You had one job yesterday.”

“What?”

“Be my husband.”

He looked down.

“You didn't have to fight your mother. You didn't have to shout. You had to open a car door.”

Silence.

“You couldn't even do that.”

His eyes filled.

Finally.

Not enough.

“I was afraid if I challenged her, she’d make the whole weekend hell.”

Sofia almost laughed.

“So you gave me the hell instead.”

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

There.

Truth.

Then:

“I can fix this.”

“No.”

“I can apologize publicly.”

“This isn't public-relations damage.”

“I'll move away from my family.”

“That's not the point either.”

“What do you want?”

The question came desperate.

Sofia thought.

Then answered.

“I want to know why I should stay married to someone who only protects me after hurting me becomes expensive.”

Javier had no answer.

She slid a folder across the table.

Divorce consultation documents.

Not filed yet.

His face went white.

“No.”

“I haven't decided.”

“Sofia.”

“That depends on what the investigation finds.”

He reached for her hand.

She moved it away.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Good.

“Did you know Mariana submitted my signature?”

“I knew paperwork went in.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word barely came.

Sofia stopped breathing.

“You knew?”

“She said she'd handle it.”

“Did you see my signature?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I thought we could explain later.”

There it was.

The marriage ended in that sentence.

Not legally.

Inside her.

“You saw someone forge your wife’s name and thought you could explain later.”

“I was trying to save my family.”

She looked at him for a long time.

“I was your family.”

Javier cried.

Sofia didn't.

Not yet.

She stood.

“Go.”

“Sofia.”

“Go.”

Security escorted him out.

Only after the elevator doors closed did Sofia sit down.

Her mother appeared from across the lounge.

She had been waiting out of earshot.

Sofia looked at her.

“I’m getting divorced.”

Elena sat beside her.

No celebration.

No “I told you so.”

Just:

“Okay.”

Sofia started crying.

May you like

Elena took her hand.

That was enough.
