Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM BETRAYAL

Richard Vale called an emergency board meeting.

He accused Bennett of reckless leadership.

He questioned the delayed European acquisition.

He criticized the independent audit.

And he described Clara Whitmore as an unqualified employee who had manipulated the chief executive.

Bennett listened without interruption.

Then stood.

“Are you finished?”

Richard smiled.

“For now.”

Bennett turned toward the board.

“I've authorized an independent investigation into irregularities involving several international contracts.”

Richard scoffed.

“Based on the accusations of a housekeeper.”

Bennett's expression hardened.

“Based on documentary evidence.”

He placed a folder on the table.

The board members opened it.

Inside were contract comparisons.

Financial records.

Access logs.

And correspondence involving Vale Strategic Advisory.

Richard's smile disappeared.

Bennett continued.

“Ms. Whitmore identified linguistic discrepancies. Our attorneys and forensic specialists independently verified them.”

One director looked up.

“Richard, did your company prepare these revisions?”

Richard hesitated.

“Yes, but—”

“Did you disclose your financial interest?”

Silence.

Bennett watched him.

“Answer the question.”

Richard's face reddened.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

The board chair closed the folder.

“Mr. Vale, you are being placed on administrative leave pending investigation.”

Richard stood abruptly.

“You can't do this.”

Bennett looked at him.

“You taught me something important, Richard.”

Richard glared.

“What?”

Bennett's voice became quiet.

“That loyalty without accountability is just another form of blindness.”

Security escorted Richard from the room.

Clara watched from the hallway.

She didn't smile.

She didn't celebrate.

She simply closed her eyes.

For fourteen months, Richard had controlled the story told about her.

Now the evidence was finally speaking for itself.
