Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF TELLING THE TRUTH

The investigation expanded.

Regulators reviewed transactions.

Law enforcement examined potential fraud.

Former employees came forward.

Richard denied wrongdoing.

But the evidence continued to grow.

Clara's former university opened a new review of the circumstances surrounding her dismissal.

Several faculty members acknowledged that her original concerns had not been properly investigated.

Julia Mercer helped Clara negotiate the process.

One afternoon, Clara received a letter.

The university formally withdrew the finding that she had violated research confidentiality.

It acknowledged procedural failures and offered to discuss reinstatement and compensation.

Clara read the letter three times.

Then sat down.

For fourteen months, she had carried the shame of an accusation she knew was false.

Now the institution that had helped destroy her reputation was admitting its mistakes.

She called Noah.

He answered immediately.

“Clara?”

She couldn't speak.

“What's wrong?”

She began crying.

“Clara?”

She laughed through tears.

“They cleared me.”

Silence.

Then Noah shouted:

“I knew it!”

She laughed harder.

That evening, Bennett found her in the office library.

She was sitting beside a window, holding the letter.

“Good news?” he asked.

She nodded.

“The university withdrew the finding.”

Bennett smiled.

“Clara, that's wonderful.”

She looked down.

“I thought I'd feel different.”

He sat opposite her.

“How?”

“Like everything would suddenly be fixed.”

He considered.

“Maybe the truth doesn't erase what happened.”

She looked up.

“Maybe it just gives you a place to start again.”

Clara smiled faintly.

“That's surprisingly wise for a man who once yelled at a room full of attorneys.”

Bennett laughed.

“I'm improving.”

She studied him.

May you like

“Yes,” she said softly.

“You are.”
