Chapter 13 - THE LAST SECRET OF ENZO ROMANO

Z

The final revelation came from an old safety deposit box.

It belonged to Enzo Romano.

Its existence had been discovered during a review of archived estate records.

Luca had never known about it.

Inside were letters, family photographs, and a sealed document addressed to him.

He opened the envelope in Sophia's presence.

His hands trembled.

The letter began:

Luca,

If you're reading this, there are things I failed to tell you while I was alive.

Luca stopped.

Sophia sat beside him.

He continued reading.

Enzo described discovering irregularities in the family business.

He admitted he'd ignored warning signs because confronting them would have threatened his position.

He wrote about András Varga.

A man he had met in Vienna.

A man who had warned him about Winter Seven.

I dismissed him at first. He was a careful man, and I mistook caution for weakness.

Sophia covered her mouth.

Luca read on.

Eventually, I realized he was right.

His voice broke.

I intended to speak with him again. But before I could, I was told he'd died.

The letter continued.

Enzo expressed concern that Vittorio Sala had become too influential within the family.

He warned Luca not to confuse loyalty with obedience.

And then came the final paragraph.

Son, I raised you to believe strength means never showing uncertainty. I was wrong. The strongest man in a room may be the one willing to admit he doesn't know everything.

Luca began crying.

Sophia took his hand.

For years, he'd remembered his father as an unshakable figure.

Now he was discovering that Enzo had possessed doubts.

Regrets.

A desire to change.

Not enough time.

After reading the letter, Luca sat quietly.

Then whispered, “He was trying.”

Sophia nodded.

“Yes.”

“I thought he believed all of it.”

“Perhaps he did once.”

Luca looked toward the window.

“Do you think people can change before it's too late?”

Sophia considered.

“I think the important part is not waiting for the perfect moment.”

He looked at her.

She smiled sadly.

“Sometimes the perfect moment never arrives.”

That evening, they visited the cemetery where Enzo Romano was buried.

Luca carried white flowers.

Sophia stood beside him.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Luca said quietly, “I know more now.”

The wind moved through the trees.

“I know you made mistakes. I know you were afraid. And I know you wanted something different for me.”

His voice trembled.

“I'm going to try to build it.”

Sophia watched him.

Then stepped closer.

He took her hand.

For the first time, she understood that the two of them had been shaped by similar grief.

Two fathers.

Two unfinished warnings.

Two children who had spent years carrying questions.

Now they were choosing answers.

Not perfect ones.

But honest ones.
