Chapter 10 - THE FALL OF VITTORIO SALA

Z

The investigation into Winter Seven reached its turning point in December.

Forensic accountants and investigators reconstructed the ownership of the disputed freight operations.

The records showed a network of fraudulent transactions involving falsified shipping documentation and unauthorized payments.

Several companies had been used to conceal beneficial ownership.

The evidence pointed toward Vittorio Sala and associates who had controlled significant parts of the Romano family's business arrangements.

But the investigation also revealed something Sophia hadn't expected.

Enzo Romano had begun questioning the transactions shortly before his death.

So had András Varga.

Their concerns overlapped.

And both men had faced pressure to stop.

The authorities reopened inquiries into their deaths.

The results were complicated.

Some misconduct could be established.

Some earlier claims remained uncertain because evidence had been lost or degraded.

But investigators uncovered communications suggesting that individuals associated with Vittorio had obstructed inquiries and concealed relevant records.

Vittorio was arrested on charges connected to fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction.

He denied wrongdoing.

The legal proceedings would take time.

But his influence inside the Romano organization ended.

Luca watched the news from his office.

Sophia stood beside the window.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Luca said, “He was there when my father died.”

Sophia looked toward him.

“He was the person who told me how to survive the funeral.”

His voice broke.

“I believed him.”

Sophia stepped closer.

“You were twenty-five.”

“I should've known.”

She shook her head.

“Trusting someone isn't the same as causing their betrayal.”

He looked at her.

For a moment, his eyes filled.

Then he whispered, “I don't know who I am without all of this.”

Sophia considered.

“Then maybe you get to find out.”

Luca looked toward the city.

The organization he'd inherited had defined him for more than a decade.

Its rules.

Its enemies.

Its expectations.

Now those foundations were collapsing.

But perhaps collapse wasn't always destruction.

Sometimes it was the beginning of rebuilding.

That evening, Luca made a decision.

He would separate the legitimate Romano businesses from the criminal enterprises inherited from his father.

He would cooperate with appropriate investigations and accept responsibility for his own past conduct.

He would no longer maintain an organization through fear.

Dante listened quietly.

Then asked, “Do you realize what that will cost?”

Luca nodded.

“Yes.”

“Money?”

“Yes.”

“Influence?”

“Yes.”

“Protection?”

Luca looked toward Sophia.

Then answered.

“Perhaps.”

Dante studied him.

Then smiled faintly.

“Your father would've called this weakness.”

Luca looked back.

“Maybe.”

He paused.

“But I'm beginning to think my father was wrong about a lot of things.”

Sophia learned about the decision the next morning.

She met Luca in a small café.

No guards.

No negotiations.

Just coffee.

He looked exhausted.

But strangely peaceful.

“Did you sleep?” she asked.

“A little.”

“Good.”

He smiled.

“I told Dante I'm restructuring everything.”

She stared.

“Everything?”

“The legitimate businesses will be audited and governed independently. Anything unlawful has to be addressed.”

Sophia studied him.

“Why?”

Luca looked at her.

“Because I don't want another person to spend two years hiding in a pantry because they're afraid of the people who work for me.”

Her throat tightened.

“Luca.”

He continued.

“And because my father and yours deserved the truth.”

Sophia felt tears gather.

For the first time, she saw a future that wasn't built entirely around danger.

May you like

Not because the past had disappeared.

Because someone had finally chosen to stop repeating it.
