Chapter 1 — The Scream Behind the Bathroom Door

The smell of burning hair is something you never forget. It’s sulfurous, acrid, and it triggers a primal alarm in the deepest part of your brain that screams: Damage. Fire. Pain.

I was halfway down the marble hallway, holding a basket of freshly folded laundry, when that smell hit me.

My stomach dropped.

It was 6:00 PM on a Tuesday. In the Sterling household, that meant "prep time." Arthur Sterling, the CEO of Sterling heavy industries and the man who signed my paychecks, was hosting a charity gala tonight. His fiancée, Vanessa, was in charge of getting his seven-year-old daughter, Bella, ready.

Bella hadn’t spoken a word in two years. Not since her mother died in that car accident.

I dropped the laundry basket. The pristine white towels spilled onto the floor, but I didn't care. I started running.

My shoes squeaked against the polished floor, the sound echoing through the massive, empty house. I needed this job. I needed it more than I had ever needed anything. My rent was two months behind, and my own mother was sitting in a dialysis clinic three towns over, relying on the insurance this job provided.

Do not interfere. That was the rule.

“You are the help, Sarah,” Vanessa had told me on my first day, her smile tight and devoid of warmth. “You clean, you feed the kid, and you stay invisible. Arthur doesn’t like clutter.”

But the smell was getting stronger.

I burst through the double doors of the master bathroom. The steam from the shower still lingered in the air, mixing with the sickening scent of scorched keratin.

The scene froze me.

Bella was sitting on a high velvet stool, her tiny hands gripping the seat so hard her knuckles were white. Her eyes were wide, wet, and terrified, fixed on the mirror.

Standing behind her was Vanessa. She looked like a runway model in her silk robe, makeup flawless, diamonds already glittering at her throat. In her right hand, she held a professional-grade styling wand. It was cranked to the max—I could see the heat shimmering off the ceramic barrel.

“I told you to stop moving, you little mute,” Vanessa hissed, her voice low and venomous. She wasn't shouting. That made it worse. It was a cold, calculated cruelty.

She grabbed a lock of Bella’s fine, honey-colored hair. She didn't curl it. She clamped the iron down near the root and held it.

Ssssszt.

Smoke rose. Bella opened her mouth in a silent scream, her body jerking away, but Vanessa yanked her back by the hair.

“Arthur wants you perfect,” Vanessa said, smiling at her own reflection in the mirror. “And if you can’t be perfect, you can at least be obedient. If you flinch again, I’ll touch your ear next time. Do you understand?”

She moved the iron closer to the child’s skin.

I didn’t think about my rent. I didn’t think about the dialysis bills. I didn’t think about the fact that Arthur Sterling was the most powerful man in the state and that assaulting his fiancée would land me in jail.

I saw red.

I crossed the bathroom in two strides.

"Get away from her!"

I didn't just grab Vanessa’s arm. I body-checked her. I slammed my shoulder into her ribs with every ounce of frustration and rage I had bottled up for six months.

Vanessa shrieked. The curling iron flew out of her hand, clattering against the marble countertop before bouncing onto the floor. Vanessa stumbled back, her high heels slipping on the rug, and she went down hard, hitting her hip against the bathtub.

I didn't wait to see if she was okay. I spun around and scooped Bella off the stool. She was trembling so violently she felt like a vibrating phone in my arms. I pulled her head into my chest, covering her eyes, shielding her from the woman on the floor.

“It’s okay,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you, Bella.”

The smell of her singed hair made me want to vomit.

Vanessa scrambled to her feet. The mask of elegance was gone. Her face was twisted into a snarl of pure, ugly rage.

“You stupid little bitch!” she screamed, lunging at me. “Do you have any idea what you just did?”

“You were burning her!” I yelled back, stepping between her and Bella. “I saw you! You were burning her on purpose!”

“I was styling her hair!” Vanessa shrieked. She looked at her arm, where a red mark was forming from my shove. “You assaulted me. Oh my god. You actually put your hands on me.”

She started laughing. It was a manic, terrifying sound.

“You’re done,” she spat. “You’re not just fired, Sarah. I’m going to ruin you. I’m going to have you arrested for assault. I’ll make sure you never work in this city again. And your sick mother? Good luck paying for her treatment from a jail cell.”

My blood ran cold. She knew. She knew about my mom. I had never told her, which meant she had gone through my files.

“Please,” I said, my voice cracking, the adrenaline fading into dread. “Vanessa, you were hurting her. Look at her hair!”

I pointed to the jagged, frizzed patch on Bella’s head where the heat had snapped the strands.

“She’s clumsy,” Vanessa said, smoothing her silk robe, her composure returning instantly. “She jerked her head. It was an accident. But you attacking me? That wasn’t an accident.”

She walked over to the wall intercom and pressed the button.

“Security? Send the police. The nanny just went crazy. She attacked me and...” She paused, looking at Bella with a cruel glint in her eyes. “And she tried to hurt Bella.”

My jaw dropped. “What? You’re lying!”

“Who is Arthur going to believe?” Vanessa whispered, leaning in close to me. “His future wife, or the desperate charity case he hired to scrub his toilets?”

She reached out to grab Bella’s arm. “Give her to me.”

“No!” I slapped her hand away. Bella clung to my leg, burying her face in my apron.

“Get out of my house,” Vanessa hissed. “Before I have the guards drag you out.”

I stood my ground. I knew my life was over. I knew I had just lost everything. But I couldn't leave this little girl alone with this monster. Not now.

“I’m not leaving until Mr. Sterling gets here,” I said, my voice trembling but firm.

Vanessa threw her head back and laughed. “Arthur? You think Arthur cares? He’s downstairs dealing with investors. He doesn't have time for domestic drama. He barely looks at the kid, haven't you noticed? He thinks she’s broken. That’s why he needs me. To fix this family.”

She took a step toward me, raising her hand to slap me.

“I’m going to teach you your place, you filthy little—”

CLICK.

The heavy mahogany door to the bedroom swung open.

The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Arthur Sterling stood in the doorway.

He was wearing his tuxedo for the gala, but his tie was undone. He was a tall man, broad-shouldered, with a face carved from granite and eyes that usually looked right through people. He held a stillness that was more terrifying than Vanessa’s screaming.

He didn’t look at me. He didn’t look at Bella.

His eyes were locked on Vanessa.

“Arthur!” Vanessa gasped, her entire demeanor shifting instantly. She crumbled, bringing her hands to her face, forcing out a sob. “Oh, thank god you’re here! Sarah... she went crazy! She tried to burn Bella with the iron and when I tried to stop her, she hit me! Look at my arm!”

She ran toward him, tears streaming down her face. It was an Oscar-worthy performance.

“I was so scared, Arthur! She’s unstable! You have to get her out of here!”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. This is it, I thought. He’s going to believe her. Why wouldn't he? She’s beautiful, she’s wealthy, she’s his equal. I’m nobody.

I looked down at Bella. She was looking up at her father, her eyes pleading, but she stayed silent.

Arthur didn’t move. He didn’t open his arms to catch his sobbing fiancée.

He just stood there, blocking the exit.

“Arthur?” Vanessa stopped, confused by his lack of reaction. “Did you hear me? She attacked me!”

Arthur slowly walked into the room. The sound of his dress shoes was heavy and deliberate. He walked past Vanessa as if she were a piece of furniture.

He came straight to me.

I braced myself. I expected him to yell, to grab me, to throw me out. I squeezed Bella’s shoulder, ready to shield her again.

Arthur stopped two feet in front of me. He looked down at my hand.

“You’re burned,” he said. His voice was a deep rumble, devoid of emotion.

I looked down. I hadn't even felt it, but there was a long, angry red blister forming across the back of my hand where I had swatted the iron.

“I... It doesn't matter,” I stammered. “Mr. Sterling, please, you have to listen to me. I didn't hurt Bella. I would never—”

“Be quiet,” he said softly.

He reached out and gently—so gently it shocked me—touched Bella’s singed hair. Bella didn't flinch away from him. She leaned into his hand.

He looked at the burnt hair. Then he looked at the curling iron on the floor.

Then he turned to Vanessa.

Vanessa was nervous now. She laughed, a high-pitched, brittle sound. “Arthur, why are you looking at me like that? I told you, the girl is crazy. Just fire her and let’s get ready. The guests will be arriving soon.”

Arthur reached into his pocket. He pulled out his phone.

He held it up. The screen was glowing.

It was a live video feed.

Vanessa’s face went pale. “What is that?”

“I had new security cameras installed three days ago,” Arthur said. His voice was deadly calm. “Hidden ones. With audio.”

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bones.

“I was in my study,” Arthur continued, taking a step toward Vanessa. “I was watching the feed to see if Bella was ready. I saw everything, Vanessa. I saw you burn her. I saw you threaten her. And I saw Sarah save her.”

Vanessa stumbled back. “Arthur, wait, I can explain! It’s... it’s discipline! She needs a mother figure! I was just trying to—”

“You were trying to torture my daughter,” Arthur said.

He tapped a button on his phone.

“Send them in.”

From the hallway, the heavy footsteps of boots approached. Two police officers appeared in the doorway, followed by the head of Arthur’s security team.

“Arthur, please!” Vanessa screamed, backing into the corner. “You can’t do this! The gala! The press! Think about your reputation!”

Arthur looked at her with a disgust so profound it looked like physical pain.

“My reputation?” he asked. “You touched my daughter. You think I care about a party?”

He nodded to the officers. “Get her out of my sight. And check her bag. I want everything documented.”

As the officers moved in to handcuff a screaming Vanessa, Arthur turned back to me.

I was shaking. I was still holding Bella, tears streaming down my face from the sheer release of tension.

“Sarah,” he said.

“Yes, sir?” I whispered.

“You’re fired,” he said.

My heart stopped. The world spun. After all that? After he saw the video?

“What?” I choked out.

Arthur knelt down so he was eye-level with me. For the first time in six months, I saw emotion in his eyes. Regret. And gratitude.

“You’re fired as the nanny,” he said firmly. “Because no one who protects my family like that should be treating them as a boss. You’re not the help anymore, Sarah.”

He stood up and offered me his hand.

“But we can discuss your new position later. Right now, I think we need to get that hand treated. And...” He looked at Bella. “I think we owe you an explanation. About everything. About why I hired Vanessa in the first place.”

I took his hand. It was warm.

“Why?” I asked, confused.

Arthur’s face darkened.

“Because Vanessa wasn't just a fiancée,” he said, watching the police drag the screaming woman down the hall. “She was the only link I had to the people who really killed my wife. And tonight, thanks to you, we finally have enough to bury them.
