Chapter 1 - THE MANSION ACROSS THE STREET

"Your mother is used to serving people. She can finish cooking before she sits down."

Those were the very first words I heard when I walked into my house, three hours earlier than anyone expected.

My flight from Guadalajara landed ahead of schedule in Phoenix. I had just wrapped up an important business contract and couldn't wait to see my mother, Alexis, who had traveled from Prescott to spend time with my four-year-old son, Donovan. Before leaving, I had reminded my husband, Caden, to treat her well. She suffered from arthritis and had been dealing with severe knee pain for weeks.

I opened the front door expecting to find her resting.

Instead, the living room was freezing with the air conditioner set to sixteen degrees Celsius. My mother-in-law, Bonnie, was stretched out on the couch eating grapes. Caden sat beside her playing games on his tablet, an open beer on the coffee table. Dirty dishes and piles of clothes were scattered everywhere.

Then I heard Donovan crying in the kitchen.

My mother was standing over the stove with my son tied to her back in a traditional shawl. She stirred a large pot with one hand while supporting him with the other. Her blouse was soaked with sweat, her face was pale, and her hands were trembling. The kitchen felt like an oven, and no one had even bothered to turn on the small fan.

"Mom, what are you doing?" I asked.

She looked startled, almost as if she were the one being caught doing something wrong.

"It's nothing, Taylor," she replied softly. "Your mother-in-law asked me to cook the roast goat and wash Caden's clothes. I'm almost finished."

From the living room, Bonnie shouted,

"And tell her not to use so much salt. Country people always cook everything so poorly."

Caden didn't even look up.

"And have her iron my blue shirt too. I have a meeting tomorrow."

Something inside me snapped.

For six years, I had endured their in:sults about my small-town upbringing. I had paid for the house, the car, our vacations, and even my mother-in-law's designer handbags. I kept telling myself that staying silent was the price of keeping my family together.

But seeing the woman who had sold her land so I could afford college being treated like a servant erased the obedient wife they thought they knew.

I untied Donovan from her back, wiped the sweat from my mother's face, and took her hand.

"We're leaving."

Bonnie jumped to her feet.

"What do you mean you're leaving? Your mother hasn't finished cooking. And you get back into that kitchen. A woman can earn millions, but at home she still has to take care of her husband."

Caden finally stood.

"Stop making a scene. Apologize to my mother and turn the stove back on."

I didn't argue.

Instead, I called the manager of our gated community and activated the protocol I had arranged long ago. The smart electrical panel was disconnected, the water pump to the cistern was shut off, and every one of my authorized bank cards was immediately deactivated.

Twenty seconds later, the air conditioner shut down, the television went black, and the entire house fell into silence.

"What did you do?" Caden shouted.

"I gave you the lifestyle you can actually afford."

I picked up a suitcase, carried Donovan in my arms, and walked across the street with my mother.

Standing before us was the largest house in the neighborhood, a magnificent mansion built from pale stone, the same home Caden and Bonnie had admired for years.

I placed my finger on the biometric scanner.

The bronze doors slowly opened.

Caden ran toward us barefoot.

"Taylor! Why do you have access to that house?"

I turned around as the doors began closing behind us.

"Because I bought it three years ago. It's completely paid off, has no mortgage, and it's solely in my name."

The expressions on their faces changed in an instant. First disbelief. Then fear. Finally, a look of naked greed that confirmed I had made the right decision.

What they still didn't know was that the mansion wasn't my only secret.
