Chapter 4 - WHY GRACE CAME TO THE HOUSE

Grace Miller had not applied randomly.

Her late sister, Hannah, had been Rebecca’s closest friend in college.

I did not know.

Grace told me only after the investigation began.

“Hannah died five years ago.”

“I’m sorry.”

“She used to talk about Rebecca constantly.”

I remembered the name vaguely.

Christmas cards.

Wedding photographs.

Lives drift.

Then Grace explained:

After Rebecca died, Hannah’s old belongings came to Grace.

Among them were letters.

Rebecca had written about me.

About Sophie.

About pregnancy with Caleb.

One letter said:

If anything ever happens to me, Evan will love those kids so much he’ll probably turn the house into a military base. Somebody will have to remind him that children need warmth, not just protection.

I laughed despite myself.

That sounded exactly like Rebecca.

Grace smiled.

“I applied because I wanted to see whether the kids were okay.”

“That’s strange.”

“Yes.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Would you have hired me if I said I was your dead wife’s best friend’s sister coming to check your parenting?”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

Fair.

But Grace had not entered with a plan to expose Vanessa.

She expected awkward grief.

Maybe spoiled rich children.

Maybe an emotionally distant father.

Instead she found terrified staff and children monitoring Vanessa’s moods.

That was when she started documenting.

Not for leverage.

For proof.

Because household employees kept whispering:

“Mr. Whitaker would never believe us.”

That sentence hurt too.

Why wouldn’t they?

Because Vanessa controlled access.

Because I had empowered her.

Because my reputation made disagreement feel dangerous.

I had spent years believing fear kept enemies out.

May you like

I never considered what it did to honest people inside.
