Chapter 3 - TWO SETS OF RULES

The notebook Grace kept was devastating because it was ordinary.

No dramatic crimes on every page.

Mostly small cruelty.

March 6:

Vanessa removed Rebecca’s photograph from Sophie’s desk. Said “dead people don’t need bedrooms.”

March 8:

Caleb cried after nightmare. Vanessa told night nanny not to pick him up for fifteen minutes.

March 10:

Sophie asked whether Daddy would be home Friday. Vanessa said “not if you keep making trouble.”

March 11:

Cynthia Vale told Sophie good girls don’t burden powerful fathers.

March 12:

Vanessa made Sophie apologize for mentioning Rebecca during wedding fitting.

Then:

March 13:

Sophie received pink medicine. Slept unusually deeply.

Six nights.

Grace had recorded audio from the hallway on her phone.

Not hidden devices inside bedrooms.

She sat outside the door and used her own phone when she heard yelling.

My attorney reviewed admissibility questions separately.

But I did not need a courtroom to know what I heard.

Vanessa:

“Your father has important things to do.”

Sophie:

“I know.”

Vanessa:

“Then stop making him regret coming home.”

My daughter started crying.

Vanessa:

“See? That sound is why he leaves.”

I paused the recording.

Couldn’t continue.

Grace sat across from me in the library.

Michael near the door.

My attorney, Julia Mercer, beside me.

“Why didn’t Sophie tell me?”

Grace answered carefully.

“She thought she was protecting you.”

That sentence destroyed me.

“From what?”

“Disappointment.”

I stared.

Grace continued.

“Vanessa taught her that if you knew the children were difficult, you would leave more.”

Sophie had not feared punishment.

She feared abandonment.

That was worse.

I looked down.

“My work travel…”

Grace did not let me hide there.

“You traveled.”

“Yes.”

“She used it.”

Both true.

I had been gone too often.

But being busy did not excuse Vanessa.

And Vanessa’s cruelty did not erase my absence.

Two truths.

Harder than one villain.

May you like

Better than one lie.
