Chapter 1 - THE TWO SLAPS

The first blow landed before Chloe could even zip her suitcase shut.
“Don’t you ever speak to my mother like that again,” Brian snarled.
Chloe stood completely frozen. At thirty-two, she had never imagined her husband would end up striking her across the face—all over her defending a blouse she had bought with her own hard-earned money.
Just minutes earlier, Eleanor, her mother-in-law, had walked into the bedroom without knocking and unzipped the suitcase Chloe was packing for a weekend trip to visit her parents in New Hampshire.
Just like she always did.
Eleanor reached inside, pulling out a makeup bag, a sweater, a box of luxury chocolates, and a brand-new jacket intended for Chloe’s mother. She even unzipped the interior lining.
“I just want to make sure you’re not taking anything out of this house that doesn't belong to you,” Eleanor said smoothly.
For two long years, Chloe had been forced to hear variations of that exact same phrase.
They lived in a suburban townhouse that Eleanor insisted on calling “the family estate,” even though Chloe had personally paid for the bathroom renovation, a brand-new HVAC system, months of back utilities, and the vast majority of the groceries. Chloe even paid for Eleanor’s prescription medications whenever her mother-in-law’s pension fell short.
Brian worked seasonally doing custom aluminum framing and window installations. Whenever his business struggled to pay suppliers, Chloe used her personal savings to cover the gap.
She worked as an administrative coordinator for a logistics firm in downtown Boston. She woke up at 5:40 every morning, worked long hours, and still came home to do most of the housework.
Yet Eleanor treated her like a thieving intruder.
That morning, Chloe finally reached her breaking point.
“Stop going through my suitcase,” Chloe said, her voice shaking. “Everything in here was bought with my own money.”
Eleanor smiled with pure contempt. “As long as you live under this roof, I decide what belongs to you and what belongs to us.”
“Then maybe you should remember who pays the mortgage on this house when your son can't.”
That was the moment Brian stepped into the doorway.
For a brief, naive second, Chloe thought he was going to stand up for her and put a stop to his mother's behavior.
Instead, he struck her across the face.
And when Chloe looked at him in dazed, horrified disbelief, he hit her again.
“Don't start making a drama out of this,” he muttered coldly. “It was just two slaps.”
Eleanor didn't even pretend to be surprised. “Maybe now you’ll learn how to show some respect.”
Chloe knelt down, picked her clothes up off the floor, packed her suitcase, and walked out the front door without screaming.
Hours later, as Chloe sat at her parents' kitchen table in New Hampshire, her father noticed the dark, purplish bruise forming along her cheekbone.
Chloe broke down and told them everything.
Her mother cried softly. Her father stood up without a word, walked over to a metal filing cabinet in the hallway, and pulled out a worn tin box containing old bank receipts.
Inside were the deposit records for the $20,000 her parents had given Chloe as a wedding gift to help start her life.
Her mother then confessed something she had kept secret for years: she had sold her grandmother’s antique jewelry to complete that gift.
Late that night, Brian sent a text:
“Come back tomorrow and apologize to my mother. Don't throw away a marriage over two slaps.”
Chloe read the text once.
Then she logged into her online bank account.
And she began downloading two full years of financial statements.
First thing the next morning, she called a top family law attorney in Boston.
She thought she was simply going to find out how much money she had lost during her marriage.
