Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO WAITED WITHOUT ASKING

The Halston Grand charity gala was scheduled for March.

Three hundred guests.

A live orchestra.

A silent auction.

A fundraising goal of half a million dollars.

Olivia had spent four months planning every detail.

She knew the floral arrangements.

The seating chart.

The lighting cues.

The dietary restrictions.

The emergency exits.

Everything.

Except one thing.

Whether Gabriel Moretti would attend.

He was one of the event's major donors.

His name appeared on the guest list.

Olivia stared at it for a long time.

Then she closed the spreadsheet.

She would not change her plans because of him.

On the evening of the gala, she wore a deep green dress.

Her hair was pinned loosely at the back of her neck.

She carried a clipboard instead of a clutch.

At 6:45 p.m., the first guests arrived.

At 7:10, the orchestra began.

At 7:30, Olivia spotted Gabriel.

He stood near the entrance in a black tuxedo.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Silver at his temples.

Exactly as she remembered.

Her heart stumbled.

He saw her.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he approached.

“Olivia.”

“Gabriel.”

His eyes softened.

“You look beautiful.”

She smiled faintly.

“Thank you.”

He glanced around.

“The event is extraordinary.”

“It's not finished yet.”

“I'm confident it will be.”

She laughed softly.

“Still very certain of yourself.”

“Not about everything.”

Their eyes met.

A quiet sadness passed between them.

Gabriel looked away first.

“I won't keep you from your work.”

Olivia nodded.

“Thank you.”

He stepped aside.

No pressure.

No request.

No dramatic declaration.

Just respect.

Olivia spent the next three hours working.

The event ran smoothly.

The auction exceeded its goal.

The orchestra played beautifully.

And when the final donation total was announced, the room erupted in applause.

Six hundred and twelve thousand dollars.

Olivia stood near the back of the ballroom, smiling through tears.

Then someone touched her elbow.

Gabriel.

“Congratulations.”

She looked at him.

“Thank you.”

“You earned this.”

Olivia swallowed.

“I know.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

For a moment, they stood together.

Then Olivia asked, “Would you walk with me?”

Gabriel looked surprised.

“Of course.”

They stepped onto the terrace.

The same terrace.

The same Chicago River.

The same lights reflected in the water.

But the woman standing there was different.

Olivia leaned against the railing.

“Do you remember the first time we were here?”

Gabriel smiled faintly.

“Vividly.”

“I asked you to kiss my forehead.”

“Yes.”

“Because I wanted Richard to think someone wanted me.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Olivia looked at him.

“I spent years believing love was something I had to earn by being useful.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

“I thought if I worked harder, stayed prettier, complained less, made fewer mistakes, Richard would finally stop making me feel inadequate.”

Gabriel watched her.

“And now?”

Olivia smiled.

“Now I know he was never going to give me what I needed.”

Gabriel nodded.

She continued.

“When you kept that letter from me, I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“Not because you were dangerous.”

He looked at her.

“Because I was beginning to trust you.”

Gabriel's eyes filled with regret.

“I understand.”

Olivia took a breath.

“I needed to know I could walk away from someone I loved if staying meant losing myself.”

He nodded slowly.

“And you did.”

“Yes.”

She smiled through tears.

“But I also needed to know whether you could respect that choice.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“I'll always respect it.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“Even if I choose to come back?”

He went completely still.

“Olivia.”

She touched his hand.

“I love you, Gabriel.”

For a moment, he didn't breathe.

Then he whispered, “You don't have to say that because—”

“I'm not saying it because you helped me.”

She smiled.

“I'm saying it because I know who you are. The good parts. The difficult parts. The mistakes you're trying to correct.”

His eyes shone.

“And I want to see what we can build together.”

Gabriel lifted her hand to his lips.

“Are you sure?”

Olivia laughed softly.

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“May I kiss you?”

She smiled.

“On the forehead?”

Gabriel laughed.

“If you'd like.”

Olivia shook her head.

“Not this time.”

He kissed her.

Slowly.

Gently.

And when she wrapped her arms around him, she knew something important.

She wasn't returning because she needed saving.

May you like

She was returning because she wanted to love him.

And this time, the choice belonged entirely to her.
