Chapter 11 - THE CONFESSION THAT CAME TOO LATE

Arthur Bellini was arrested four days later.
Investigators located him at a private airport outside Chicago.
He was preparing to board a chartered flight.
Inside his briefcase were financial records, two passports, and a phone containing messages connected to Richard Hayes.
Olivia learned the news from Detective Ruiz.
She sat in Allison Grant's office, staring at the detective.
“Does this mean you can prove what happened to my father?”
Detective Ruiz was careful.
“We have evidence of threats, financial misconduct, and efforts to conceal records. We're still investigating the crash.”
Olivia nodded.
She had learned not to confuse progress with certainty.
Richard remained missing.
But the evidence against him was growing.
Forensic investigators had identified unauthorized access to Hayes Events' banking systems.
Several suspicious documents appeared to have been created from devices associated with Richard's consulting company.
The forged signatures were being examined.
And the two-million-dollar transfer trail was beginning to unravel.
Olivia listened as Allison explained the next steps.
Then she asked, “Can we save the company?”
Allison smiled.
“We have a much stronger position now.”
Olivia exhaled.
For months, she'd felt as though she were standing beneath a collapsing ceiling.
Now, finally, she could see daylight.
That evening, Gabriel invited her to dinner.
Not at a restaurant.
Not at a gala.
At his house.
He cooked.
Badly.
Olivia stood in the kitchen watching him examine a pan of burned chicken.
“Gabriel.”
“Yes?”
“Is that supposed to be black?”
He looked down.
“It's seared.”
“It's carbonized.”
He frowned.
“There's a difference.”
“Not enough.”
She laughed.
He smiled.
Then he turned off the stove.
“Pizza?”
“Definitely.”
They ordered from a neighborhood restaurant.
Ate at the kitchen island.
And talked about ordinary things.
Books.
Music.
Olivia's childhood.
Gabriel's terrible cooking.
For a while, the world outside seemed far away.
Then Gabriel became quiet.
Olivia noticed.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“There's something I need to tell you.”
Her stomach tightened.
“Okay.”
He took a breath.
“When your father died, my father believed Edward Hayes was responsible.”
Olivia stared.
“You knew that?”
“I found a letter in my father's private archive yesterday.”
“What did it say?”
Gabriel looked ashamed.
“That Lorenzo suspected Edward had arranged the crash.”
Olivia's heart pounded.
“Why didn't he tell the police?”
“Because he was afraid of exposing his own involvement in the Mercer Project.”
She stared at him.
“So he protected himself.”
“Yes.”
“And my father died.”
Gabriel looked down.
“Yes.”
Olivia stood.
She walked toward the window.
Outside, snow had begun falling.
The first snowfall of the season.
She watched it settle on the dark lawn.
“Your father could have helped us.”
Gabriel's voice was quiet.
“Yes.”
“He could have told my mother.”
“Yes.”
“He could have made sure we knew.”
“Yes.”
Olivia turned.
“And you kept this from me for a day.”
Gabriel met her eyes.
“Yes.”
She stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid you'd leave.”
The honesty struck harder than an excuse.
Gabriel continued.
“I told myself I needed to verify the letter first. That I was protecting you from incomplete information.”
Olivia's throat tightened.
“But you were protecting yourself.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence filled the kitchen.
Then Olivia said, “That's what Richard did.”
Gabriel flinched.
She hated that it hurt him.
But she didn't take it back.
“He always decided what I was allowed to know.”
Gabriel lowered his head.
“You're right.”
Olivia wiped her eyes.
“I can't do this again.”
“I understand.”
She looked at him.
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
Gabriel stood.
“I won't ask you to stay.”
Her chest tightened.
He continued.
“I love you, Olivia.”
She stopped breathing.
It was the first time he'd said it.
He didn't move closer.
Didn't reach for her.
Didn't use the confession to demand forgiveness.
“I love you,” he repeated quietly. “But that doesn't give me the right to control your choices.”
Olivia began crying.
Gabriel looked devastated.
“I'll have Matteo drive you wherever you want to go. Or I'll leave you the keys to a car. Whatever makes you comfortable.”
She shook her head.
“I need time.”
He nodded.
“Take it.”
Olivia packed her things.
May you like
She returned to Claire's house.
And for the first time since meeting Gabriel, she wondered whether loving a dangerous man meant eventually becoming another casualty of his secrets.
