Chapter 9 - CLARA’S OWN DINNER TABLE

Two years later, Clara invited me to dinner.

Her apartment.

Not a mansion.

Warm.

Plants.

Yellow curtains.

A dining table for six.

When I arrived, she was cooking pasta.

I froze.

She noticed.

Then laughed.

“I wanted to.”

That mattered.

“Need help?”

“Yes.”

She handed me garlic.

Choice.

Julian arrived twenty minutes later.

They were living separately but rebuilding.

He brought dessert.

Store-bought.

Smart man.

Over dinner, we discussed normal things.

Work.

Traffic.

Clara’s new job at a nonprofit financial-abuse advocacy center.

Julian consulting in forensic accounting.

Then he handed me an envelope.

“What?”

“Something I found in my old files.”

A note he had written before the confrontation.

Addressed:

Danielle Reyes

Inside:

If Marcus asks you to merge anything before marriage, get independent counsel. Do not let anyone in this family make urgency feel romantic.

I laughed through tears.

“You were going to warn me?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I thought I needed perfect proof.”

He looked at Clara.

“I’ve learned that waiting for perfect proof can leave people alone too long.”

Clara touched his hand.

No drama.

Just truth.

Then she said:

“You saved me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You came back.”

“You saved yourself first.”

She frowned.

“You wrote the note.”

“You opened the gate.”

“You knocked the shelf over.”

She smiled.

“Fine.”

I raised my glass.

“We were both useful.”

May you like

Better.

Nobody needs a single hero.
