Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM WHERE JULIAN LOST CONTROL

The emergency board meeting began at nine on Monday morning.

Julian arrived carrying a leather portfolio and the confidence of a man accustomed to controlling every room he entered.

He did not know I would be there.

When he walked through the doors and saw me sitting beside Margaret, he stopped.

“Ava?”

I looked up.

“Good morning.”

He glanced around the table.

“What is this?”

The independent chair, Helen Foster, gestured toward a seat.

“Mr. Hale, please sit down.”

Julian remained standing.

“Why is my wife here?”

Helen corrected him.

“Mrs. Hale is attending as trustee of the Vale Heritage Trust, which controls Northbridge Partners' voting interest in this company.”

Silence.

Julian stared at me.

Then laughed.

“That isn't possible.”

I said nothing.

He looked at Margaret.

“Explain this.”

Margaret folded her hands.

“Northbridge's ownership structure has been disclosed in the company's governance documents for years. The Vale Heritage Trust is the ultimate controlling shareholder.”

Julian's expression changed.

“No.”

Helen slid a document across the table.

“Here is the ownership chart.”

He looked at it.

His face drained.

I watched the realization arrive.

Every negotiation.

Every investment committee meeting.

Every time he had dismissed me as someone who didn't understand business.

He had been asking for capital from a company ultimately controlled by the woman he had humiliated.

Julian turned toward me.

“You hid this.”

“I kept my private financial affairs private. The relevant corporate disclosures were available to you.”

“You manipulated me.”

I almost laughed.

“No, Julian. You simply never asked what I did.”

Helen cleared her throat.

“We need to proceed.”

The independent investigators presented their findings.

Undisclosed related-party payments.

Questionable invoices.

A disputed guarantee.

A trust diamond transferred without proper authorization.

And serious concerns regarding the proposed Westhaven acquisition.

Julian interrupted repeatedly.

He called the review a conspiracy.

He accused me of revenge.

He threatened litigation.

Finally, Helen raised her voice.

“Mr. Hale, this board is not adjudicating your marriage.”

The room fell silent.

“We are examining your conduct as chief executive.”

Julian looked around.

For the first time, nobody rushed to defend him.

After a lengthy discussion, the board voted to suspend him pending the completion of the investigation.

His authority to approve transactions was revoked.

An interim chief executive was appointed.

The Westhaven acquisition was halted.

Julian sat motionless.

Then he looked at me.

“You did this.”

I held his gaze.

“No.”

May you like

I paused.

“You did.”
