Chapter 13 - THE DAY I STOPPED LOOKING BACK

My divorce became final the following spring.

The financial settlement reflected the governing agreements, applicable law, and the assets each of us owned.

The trust remained separate under its established structure.

Julian no longer held an executive role at Hale Capital.

The investigations into his conduct continued independently of our marriage.

When Margaret called to tell me the divorce decree had been entered, I was standing in my garden.

The lavender was beginning to bloom.

I listened quietly.

Then said:

“Thank you.”

Margaret hesitated.

“How do you feel?”

I looked toward the ocean.

“Free.”

She laughed softly.

“That's a good start.”

That evening, Noah invited me to dinner.

We ate fish tacos at a little restaurant near the harbor.

Finn joined us.

He spent most of the meal explaining why his school's robotics team needed a better motor.

I listened with genuine interest.

At one point, Noah leaned toward me.

“Sorry. He gets enthusiastic.”

I smiled.

“Don't apologize.”

Finn looked up.

“Really?”

“Really. Tell me about the motor.”

His face lit up.

Later, while Noah paid the bill, Finn whispered:

“My dad likes you.”

I nearly choked on my water.

“Does he?”

Finn nodded solemnly.

“He cleans the kitchen before you come over.”

I laughed.

“That's serious.”

“Very.”

When Noah returned, I was still smiling.

“What did I miss?”

“Nothing,” Finn said.

I raised an eyebrow.

“Absolutely nothing.”

That night, Noah walked me to my door.

He looked nervous.

“Ava, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Would you like to go out sometime? Just us.”

I smiled.

“We've been having dinner together for months.”

He laughed.

“I mean a proper date.”

I looked at him.

This kind man who fixed broken railings.

Who listened without judging.

Who made his son feel important.

“Yes,” I said.

“I would.”

He smiled.

May you like

Then kissed my cheek.

And I realized I was no longer afraid of beginning again.
