Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY BUSINESS THAT ALMOST COST HIM HIS FAMILY

The Morrow investigation uncovered years of manipulated financing.

Malcolm Morrow had not intended to destroy Varelli Maritime.

He wanted pieces.

The three Newport-area piers.

Warehouse land.

A hotel parcel.

Assets difficult to acquire openly because Isabella refused every offer.

So Morrow-controlled entities bought debt around them.

Raised pressure.

Then introduced a solution.

Marriage.

Consolidation.

Friendly refinancing.

Dominic had seen the marriage as personal.

Vivien had seen it as personal too, in her own way.

She did love the idea of being Dominic Varelli's wife.

The access.

Status.

Protection.

Maybe even Dominic himself.

But love that required eliminating another woman's voice wasn't love Dominic wanted anymore.

Gerard Bell eventually admitted he withheld Isabella's requests.

His excuse:

“I thought you had too much to manage.”

Dominic stared at him.

“You decided what I was allowed to know.”

“I protected you.”

That sentence.

Again.

Dominic finally understood how often powerful families used protection to rename control.

Gerard lost his license after disciplinary proceedings and faced fraud-related charges.

Dr. Hale faced his own consequences.

Malcolm Morrow was indicted on multiple financial counts.

Vivien faced charges related to coercion, attempted fraud, witness intimidation, and the threat toward Marin's child.

Not every charge would survive.

Courts would decide.

Dominic stayed out of it.

Mostly.

His harder task was internal.

He restructured the family trust.

Not to take Isabella's voting power.

To protect it.

Independent advocate.

Independent physicians.

No incapacity determination based solely on a family doctor.

No spouse receiving automatic transaction authority through marriage.

Isabella reviewed every change.

She rejected three.

Dominic accepted all three rejections.

Progress.

Then he changed household security.

Less surveillance of employees.

More reporting channels.

Independent complaints.

Direct access to counsel for caregivers and medical staff.

Carlo asked:

“Why?”

Dominic looked toward Isabella's room.

“Because cameras record what happens.”

May you like

Then:

“They don't guarantee people feel safe enough to say what it means.”
