Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR WHO CALLED ISABELLA CONFUSED

Dr. Stephen Hale arrived the next morning for Isabella's routine neurological evaluation.

Dominic had never questioned him.

That changed.

An independent neurologist sat beside him.

Dr. Lena Morris.

Hale disliked that immediately.

“Why is she here?”

Dominic answered:

“Second opinion.”

“Your mother becomes fatigued by excessive testing.”

Isabella tapped once.

No.

Hale looked irritated.

Dr. Morris noticed.

Good.

Testing began.

Memory.

Recognition.

Comprehension.

Written commands.

Pattern matching.

Isabella scored significantly higher than Hale's previous reports suggested.

Morris reviewed old notes.

“This says she cannot reliably distinguish financial concepts.”

Dominic stared.

Hale nodded.

“She has good days.”

Isabella pointed toward a printed multiplication problem.

Then wrote the answer correctly.

Morris almost smiled.

Next:

“This report says she cannot understand multi-step legal language.”

Marin placed two simplified versions of trust clauses in front of Isabella.

She correctly identified which one transferred authority.

Hale became uncomfortable.

Dominic asked:

“When did you decide my mother was cognitively impaired?”

“I didn't say impaired.”

“You used the words reduced decisional reliability.”

“Clinically appropriate.”

“Based on?”

Hale began talking.

Long sentences.

Medical language.

Dominic let him finish.

Then Dr. Morris said:

“Her expressive aphasia is severe.”

Hale relaxed slightly.

Morris continued:

“That is not the same thing as loss of comprehension.”

Silence.

Dominic looked at Hale.

“How much has Morrow Health Ventures paid your consulting company?”

Hale went pale.

Carlo placed a financial report on the table.

One hundred eighty thousand dollars over fourteen months.

Vivien's family.

Hale stood.

“I need counsel.”

“Yes.”

Dominic nodded.

“You do.”

No threats.

No closed doors.

Hale left.

Within forty-eight hours, his attorney contacted investigators.

And Dr. Hale began talking.

Vivien had asked him to document Isabella's “declining reliability.”

Malcolm Morrow made the payments.

Hale claimed he believed it was preparation for legitimate guardianship proceedings.

Nobody in the room believed he was that naïve.

But now they knew the shape of the plan.

First:

Make Isabella appear cognitively incapable.

Second:

Transfer voting authority.

Third:

Marry Dominic.

Fourth:

Gain joint signature power.

Then approve a restructuring of Varelli waterfront debt.

Morrow-controlled lenders would exchange distressed debt for ownership interests in three piers worth nearly four times the outstanding loans.

Dominic stared at the numbers.

“They created the distress.”

His accountant nodded.

How?

Loans refinanced at variable rates through intermediaries.

Insurance agreements shifted.

A line of credit canceled without warning.

Deals Dominic had delegated to—

Gerard Bell.

Family counsel.

The man who never delivered Isabella's meeting requests.

The betrayal was no longer wearing only an engagement ring.

It had been sitting beside Dominic at board meetings for years.
