Chapter 8 - THE HAIRCUT

Six months passed.
Elena's hair grew.
Slowly.
For the first few weeks she'd hated mirrors.
Then she'd gone to a small salon and asked the stylist to cut everything evenly at her jaw.
The stylist had asked:
“Are you sure?”
Elena had smiled.
“Yes.”
This time, the choice was hers.
She loved the result.
That distinction mattered.
She attended classes.
Managed the trust.
Learned financial law.
Fought with accountants.
Visited retired Moretti workers.
Collected stories about Rafael.
Some were good.
Some weren't.
One man remembered him losing his temper.
Another said Rafael had ignored wrongdoing for years before finally acting.
Elena kept those stories too.
She didn't need a perfect father.
She needed the real one.
Damian dismantled the remaining illegal protection operation.
It cost him millions.
More importantly, it cost him control.
One night someone threw a brick through his restaurant window.
Another week a former associate publicly called him a coward.
Damian didn't retaliate.
That was harder for him than violence would have been.
He began working with legitimate port unions instead of controlling them.
Independent auditors entered Moretti Logistics.
Some family members left.
Damian let them.
Then one Saturday, he appeared at Elena's apartment carrying groceries.
She opened the door.
“What is this?”
“Dinner.”
“You cook?”
“No.”
“Then that's ingredients.”
“I watched a video.”
“This feels dangerous.”
“It probably is.”
They burned the chicken.
Overcooked the pasta.
Set off the smoke detector.
Elena laughed so hard she had to sit down.
Damian opened every window.
“You find this amusing?”
“Very.”
“I used to run six ports.”
“You can't boil noodles.”
“Different skill set.”
They ordered pizza.
Halfway through, Elena realized this was their first date.
No one had called it that.
Good.
After dinner, Damian noticed her hair.
“You changed it.”
“Months ago.”
“I noticed months ago.”
“Then why say it now?”
“Because I wanted to tell you I like it.”
She waited.
“But?”
“No but.”
“Good answer.”
Damian looked at her.
“May I kiss you?”
Elena's heartbeat accelerated.
She appreciated the question more than he could know.
Scissors had once touched her body without permission.
Now even affection came with a choice.
“Yes.”
He kissed her.
Gently.
Then stepped back first.
Elena smiled.
“What?”
“You're terrified.”
“Yes.”
“Damian Moretti is terrified of kissing me?”
“I'm terrified of doing anything that makes you regret saying yes.”
Her smile disappeared.
Not from anger.
From something softer.
“Then listen when I say no.”
“I will.”
“And believe me when I say yes.”
He looked at her.
May you like
Then kissed her again.
