Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO NEVER GOT HIS MONEY

Thomas Bennett was alive.

Seventy-two.

Living in Indiana.

He opened the door holding an oxygen tube beneath his nose and stared at Elena for a long time.

“You have Rafael's eyes.”

She nearly cried.

“You knew my father?”

“He saved my family.”

Thomas invited them inside.

Damian stayed near the door.

Elena sat.

Twenty years earlier, Thomas had been a Moretti Freight driver.

He helped organize workers demanding unpaid overtime and pension contributions.

Salvatore Moretti retaliated.

Rafael secretly distributed the missing money.

But Thomas never received his share.

“Why?”

Elena asked.

Thomas looked toward Damian.

“Because Bellini took it.”

Carlo Bellini was Isabelle's father.

At the time, he had been a young attorney handling Moretti corporate accounts.

Rafael gave Carlo the final cashier's check because Thomas had already fled Chicago after receiving threats.

Carlo promised to deliver it.

He didn't.

Instead, he deposited it through a shell company.

That $164,000 became seed money for Bellini Development.

The company that eventually made Isabelle's family worth hundreds of millions.

Elena sat motionless.

“Does Isabelle know?”

Thomas shrugged.

“Children know whatever their parents choose to teach them.”

Damian asked:

“Why didn't you tell my father?”

Thomas laughed.

“Your father?”

His expression hardened.

“Son, men like us didn't walk into Moretti houses and demand meetings.”

Damian accepted the rebuke.

Thomas looked at Elena.

“Your dad came looking for me years later.”

“When?”

“You were about sixteen.”

That stunned her.

“He found out Bellini never paid me.”

“What did he do?”

“He apologized.”

“For something he didn't do?”

“That's who Rafael was.”

Elena looked down.

Thomas continued.

“He wanted to expose Bellini. I told him not to.”

“Why?”

“My wife was dying. My sons had families. I didn't want Moretti attention returning.”

“You were afraid.”

“Yes.”

No shame.

Just truth.

Elena understood.

“Dad respected that?”

“He hated it.”

Thomas smiled.

“But yes.”

Before they left, Thomas gave her an envelope.

Rafael's handwriting.

For Elena, if she ever learns.

She opened it in the car.

Ellie,

If you're reading this, then the truth lasted longer than I did.

Her vision blurred.

I need you to understand something. I did not stay quiet because I was brave every day. Some days I stayed quiet because I was terrified.

I was afraid Salvatore would hurt you.

I was afraid the workers would lose what little they had.

I was afraid telling the truth after so many years would only make my shame look like an excuse.

Elena wiped her eyes.

Then came the line that broke her.

But please don't inherit my silence just because you inherited my name.

She closed her eyes.

Damian waited.

Finally she whispered:

“I want to tell everyone.”

“Then we tell everyone.”

“Even if it damages Moretti?”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“You didn't hesitate.”

“I've had twenty years of people protecting my name by hurting other people's.”

He started the car.

May you like

“I'm tired of it.”
