Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE CHILDREN DISAPPEARED

Audrey called the police immediately.

Then Rafe.

He arrived within twenty minutes.

But he didn't bring threats.

He brought information.

The hotel security team had preserved the threatening messages and camera footage from the employee entrance.

Rafe had contacted the police and the children's school.

Audrey stood in her kitchen, trembling.

“Someone photographed Rosie.”

Rafe nodded.

“I know.”

“What if they come back?”

He looked at her.

“We'll take precautions. And we'll let the police investigate.”

She stared.

For a man with his reputation, restraint was not what she'd expected.

Rafe noticed.

“I know what you're thinking.”

Audrey swallowed.

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the children's bedroom.

“But the last thing they need is me making this worse.”

The following morning, Audrey kept the twins home.

Naomi advised documenting the threats and informing the court handling the custody matter.

The school arranged additional pickup verification procedures.

For three days, nothing happened.

Then, on Friday afternoon, Hannah called.

Her voice was shaking.

“Audrey, I can't find them.”

Audrey froze.

“What?”

“Rosie and Owen. They were with me at the children's museum. I turned around to pay for tickets, and they were gone.”

Audrey couldn't breathe.

“Call the police.”

“I already did.”

Audrey grabbed her coat.

Rafe was in a meeting when she called.

He answered immediately.

“What's wrong?”

“The twins.”

Her voice broke.

“They're missing.”

Within minutes, police began searching the museum and reviewing security footage.

Rafe arrived at Audrey's side.

He didn't tell her everything would be fine.

He couldn't know.

Instead, he held her hand while investigators worked.

Forty minutes later, a security officer found the children in a staff corridor.

Rosie was crying.

Owen was holding her hand.

A woman wearing a museum volunteer badge had told them their mother was waiting near the service entrance.

The twins had followed her.

Then Owen became suspicious when she couldn't answer a question about their mother.

He pulled Rosie into a storage alcove and refused to move.

A maintenance worker heard them.

The woman disappeared before security arrived.

Audrey ran toward her children.

Rosie screamed.

“Mommy!”

Audrey dropped to her knees and held them both.

Owen was shaking.

“I remembered what you said.”

Audrey cried.

“What, baby?”

He swallowed.

“You said nobody gets to take us anywhere unless they know our secret word.”

Audrey kissed his forehead.

“You did exactly the right thing.”

Rosie sobbed against her shoulder.

Rafe knelt beside them.

He didn't touch the children until they reached for him.

Then both twins threw themselves into his arms.

Audrey watched.

And something inside her broke open.

Not fear.

Not grief.

Love.

Terrifying, undeniable love.

That evening, police identified the woman from security footage.

Her name was Marissa Cole.

She worked for a private security contractor connected to Martin Kessler.

And the contractor had received payments from Celeste Whitmore.
