Chapter 15 - I'M TAKING ALL THREE HOME

Six years after Grant Whitmore abandoned his pregnant wife, Audrey Hayes stood in the garden of a small estate overlooking the Hudson River.
She wore a simple ivory wedding dress.
Rosie wore purple.
Owen wore a tiny navy suit.
And Rafe Callahan stood beneath an arch of white flowers looking more nervous than anyone had ever seen him.
The wedding was private.
Family.
Close friends.
The people who had stayed.
Grant attended at Audrey's invitation.
He sat quietly near the back.
His relationship with the twins had improved slowly through consistent visits, counseling, and honest conversations.
He had not become the father he'd once imagined he would be.
But he was learning to be present.
Celeste's criminal case had concluded with convictions on several charges.
Her schemes had been exposed.
The threats had ended.
Rafe had continued separating his remaining businesses from the criminal world that had once defined him.
He had accepted scrutiny.
Lost associates.
And made difficult changes.
But today, none of that was the center of the story.
Today was about a family.
When Audrey reached the altar, Rafe took her hands.
His eyes were wet.
She smiled.
“Are you crying?”
He shook his head.
“Respiratory issue.”
Audrey laughed.
The officiant smiled.
They exchanged vows.
Rafe promised honesty.
Patience.
Respect.
And the courage to keep choosing the right thing even when it was difficult.
Audrey promised love.
Partnership.
And to never let him forget that she was perfectly capable of making her own decisions.
Everyone laughed.
Then Rosie stepped forward.
She held a small folded paper.
“Can I say something?”
Audrey nodded.
Rosie looked at Rafe.
“When Mommy was sad, you made her tea.”
Rafe swallowed.
“When Owen was sick, you stayed.”
Owen nodded.
“And when I was scared, you didn't tell me not to be scared.”
Rosie's voice trembled.
“You just held my hand.”
Rafe's eyes filled.
Rosie smiled.
“So I think you're a good dad.”
Rafe knelt.
Rosie hugged him.
Owen joined them.
Audrey covered her mouth.
For a moment, the entire garden was silent.
Then the guests began applauding.
After the ceremony, Grant approached Audrey.
He looked older.
Quieter.
“Congratulations.”
Audrey smiled.
“Thank you.”
He hesitated.
“I'm glad they're happy.”
She looked toward the twins.
They were laughing with Rafe near the cake table.
“So am I.”
Grant swallowed.
“I know I can't change what happened.”
“No.”
He nodded.
“But I'm grateful you let me know them.”
Audrey studied him.
Then said:
“Keep showing up for them.”
Grant nodded.
“I will.”
That evening, after the guests left, Audrey stood on the terrace with Rafe.
The twins were asleep upstairs.
The house was quiet.
The river shimmered beneath the moonlight.
Rafe wrapped an arm around her waist.
“Mrs. Callahan.”
Audrey smiled.
“Mr. Callahan.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Happy?”
She looked toward the house.
Then nodded.
“More than I knew was possible.”
Rafe smiled.
“Do you remember the night at the Halston?”
Audrey laughed softly.
“How could I forget?”
He looked toward the river.
“I remember Rosie running toward me.”
Audrey nodded.
“She was terrified.”
Rafe swallowed.
“I remember looking at you.”
She turned.
“And?”
His voice softened.
“I knew I couldn't leave you standing there alone.”
Audrey smiled.
“You didn't.”
He kissed her hand.
Then whispered:
“I'm taking all three home.”
Audrey laughed.
“You already did.”
Rafe smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked toward the warm lights glowing through the windows.
“And somehow, you brought me home too.”
Audrey leaned against him.
For six years, she'd believed abandonment was the defining story of her life.
But it wasn't.
The story wasn't about the man who left.
It was about the woman who stayed.
The mother who raised two children through exhaustion and fear.
The little girl who ran toward someone she trusted.
The little boy who learned that love could be steady.
And the man who discovered that being powerful meant nothing compared with being needed.
Inside the house, Rosie called sleepily:
“Mommy?”
Audrey smiled.
“Coming, sweetheart!”
Owen's voice followed.
“Dad?”
Rafe closed his eyes.
That word still moved him.
Every time.
He took Audrey's hand.
“Ready?”
She nodded.
“Always.”
Together, they walked inside.
Not because anyone needed rescuing.
Not because a powerful man had decided to claim a family.
May you like
But because four people had chosen one another.
And this time, nobody was leaving.
