Chapter 6 - CLAIRE LEAVES TOO

Claire ended her relationship with Trevor.
Sadi had not realized they were engaged until Claire returned the ring.
She came to Sadi’s office at the foundation carrying a folder.
“I found more.”
Sadi sighed.
“Why do people keep arriving with folders?”
Claire almost laughed.
Then handed it over.
Trevor had asked Claire to sign a cohabitation agreement.
Nothing unusual.
But attached financial schedules understated his debt and overstated his investment ownership.
He was preparing another version of himself.
Claire asked:
“Was he like this with you from the beginning?”
“No.”
That mattered.
Trevor had once been funny.
Ambitious.
Tender when nobody watched.
People love to flatten harmful partners into monsters from birth because it makes victims look foolish for loving them.
Reality was harder.
Sadi said:
“He became someone who thought every sacrifice I made proved he deserved another one.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“He always says love means loyalty.”
“Yes.”
“What did that mean with you?”
“Loyalty meant not keeping score while he kept all the scores.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
Exactly.

Claire also revealed why Trevor was desperate.
He was being considered for partnership at Halbrook.
The vote was scheduled in a month.
His entire identity revolved around it.
Same reason he panicked seeing Sadi.
He had built his professional biography around a self-made story.
Poor background.
Scholarships.
Worked his way up.
No one knew Sadi had financed the years where “self-made” was most expensive.
No one knew he had used her credit.

The partnership review now did.
