Chapter 7 - THE NEW LIFE NOBODY TOLD HIM ABOUT

Joanna sold the house the following spring.

She found a smaller rental in a quiet neighborhood near her sister's family.

Three bedrooms.

A tiny backyard.

A kitchen with blue cabinets.

Nothing fancy.

But affordable.

Safe.

And theirs.

Lucy chose the bedroom facing the garden.

Owen chose the one closest to the stairs.

Joanna bought secondhand furniture and painted the walls herself.

The children helped.

They laughed.

Argued over colors.

Spilled paint.

And slowly began building new memories.

Joanna also accepted a promotion at the medical billing company where she worked.

The hours were demanding.

But the salary was better.

Her sister, Rachel, helped with school pickups.

Neighbors became friends.

Life was still difficult.

But it was no longer frozen in the moment Daniel left.

Meanwhile, Daniel remained in Columbus.

He had begun dating a colleague named Melissa.

She was charming.

Independent.

And enjoyed the freedom of his new lifestyle.

They traveled on weekends.

Ate at expensive restaurants.

Spent evenings in quiet apartments.

At first, Daniel felt exactly what he had wanted.

Freedom.

No homework.

No bedtime routines.

No children fighting over television shows.

No wife asking him to help with dinner.

But eventually, the silence changed.

It stopped feeling peaceful.

And started feeling empty.

One evening, Melissa asked:

“Do you ever miss your kids?”

Daniel looked up.

“Of course.”

“When did you last see them?”

He hesitated.

“A few months ago.”

Melissa stared.

“A few months?”

He shrugged.

“It's complicated.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then said:

“Daniel, children aren't complicated appointments.”

He frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means they don't stop needing you because you're busy.”

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, someone outside his marriage had said what Joanna had been telling him all along.

And he didn't like hearing it.
