Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY THAT LEARNED TO LIVE WITHOUT HIM

Daniel moved into a modest apartment fifteen minutes from Joanna's neighborhood.

He found a job.

Attended counseling.

And began following a consistent parenting schedule.

He didn't arrive with expensive gifts.

He arrived on time.

He helped Owen with homework.

Learned the rules of basketball.

Attended school events.

And listened when Lucy told him about her friends.

At first, the children were cautious.

Owen rarely spoke about his feelings.

Lucy sometimes refused visits.

Daniel respected their pace.

He stopped demanding affection.

Stopped expecting forgiveness.

And stopped treating fatherhood as something he could resume exactly where he'd left off.

Months passed.

Then one afternoon, Owen invited him to a basketball game.

Daniel arrived thirty minutes early.

He sat in the bleachers.

Watched every minute.

And cheered when Owen scored.

Afterward, Owen approached him.

“Did you see that last shot?”

Daniel smiled.

“Every second.”

Owen grinned.

Then, without warning, hugged him.

Daniel froze.

Then held his son tightly.

He didn't cry until Owen walked away.

That evening, Lucy asked Daniel to read her a bedtime story during a scheduled visit.

He sat beside her.

Opened the book.

And began reading.

Halfway through, she rested her head against his arm.

Daniel kept reading.

His voice shook.

But he didn't stop.

Because he finally understood something.

Being a father wasn't about grand gestures.

It was about showing up.

Again.

May you like

And again.

And again.
