Chapter 5 - THE FIRST TIME SHE DEFIED HIM

The argument began over a charity auction.

I wanted to organize an exhibition featuring young Chicago artists.

Elio said no.

“Why?”

I stared at him across the breakfast table.

“Because it's not a good time.”

I laughed.

“Not a good time?”

He looked up.

“There are security concerns.”

I crossed my arms.

“Then explain them.”

Elio sighed.

“Ginevra—”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You don't get to make decisions for me without telling me why.”

His jaw tightened.

“I'm trying to protect you.”

I stared.

“From paintings?”

For a moment, he looked almost amused.

Then his expression hardened.

“From people who might use a public event to get close to you.”

I swallowed.

“Then say that.”

Elio looked away.

I continued.

“I can understand danger.”

My voice softened.

“I grew up in this world.”

He looked at me.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he nodded.

“Fair enough.”

We spent the next hour discussing security arrangements.

Guest lists.

Venue access.

Emergency plans.

And my right to decide whether the event was worth the risk.

In the end, I chose to proceed.

Elio agreed.

The exhibition was held at a private gallery downtown.

Young artists displayed paintings.

Sculptures.

Photography.

For the first time in months, I felt alive.

I wore a simple black dress.

No diamonds.

No elaborate hairstyle.

Just me.

Elio arrived halfway through the evening.

He stood near the entrance.

Watching.

When I approached, he smiled faintly.

“You did well.”

I laughed.

“Surprised?”

He looked at me.

“A little.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Honest.”

He smiled.

“I'm learning.”

I studied him.

Then whispered:

“Thank you for coming.”

Elio nodded.

May you like

“I wanted to see what matters to you.”

For the first time, I believed he meant it.
