Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY LEARNED TO BEG

Dario was arrested after investigators connected him to the fire.
The evidence also supported charges related to the earlier conspiracy.
My father faced scrutiny over his involvement in the shipping arrangements.
For the first time, the men who had treated women like bargaining chips were being held accountable.
But the legal process didn't erase what had happened.
The estate was damaged.
Elio's mother's painting was gone.
And I was leaving for Florence.
The night before my flight, Elio came to my room.
He knocked.
I opened the door.
“Can I come in?”
I nodded.
He stood near the window.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then he said:
“I don't want you to go.”
My heart tightened.
I looked at him.
“Elio—”
He raised a hand.
“Please let me finish.”
I nodded.
He swallowed.
“I don't want you to go because I love you.”
The room went still.
I stared.
He continued.
“I know I have no right to ask you to stay.”
His voice broke.
“And I'm not going to.”
My eyes filled.
Elio stepped closer.
“I just need you to know.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then I whispered:
“I love you too.”
Elio froze.
I smiled through tears.
“But I'm still going.”
He closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
“I know.”
I stepped closer.
“Can you wait?”
Elio looked at me.
“For you?”
I nodded.
He smiled sadly.
“Ginevra.”
He took my hand.
“I spent thirty-seven years believing I didn't need anyone.”
His eyes filled.
“I can learn to wait six months for the woman I love.”
I began crying.
He kissed my forehead.
And for the first time, I understood that love wasn't always about staying.

Sometimes it was about giving someone the freedom to leave.
And trusting that they might choose to return.
