Chapter 13 - THE APOLOGY THAT CAME WITHOUT EXCUSES

Kyle contacted me almost a year after the anniversary dinner.
His message was short.
I'd like to apologize. Properly. You don't have to respond.
I stared at it for a long time.
Then showed Meredith.
She said the decision was mine.
I waited another week.
Finally, I agreed to meet Kyle at a public café.
He looked different.
Thinner.
Quieter.
Less polished.
He stood when I arrived.
“Eleanor.”
“Kyle.”
We sat.
He folded his hands.
“I owe you an apology.”
I waited.
“Not for the cake.”
I looked up.
He swallowed.
“For everything that came before it.”
Silence.
“I treated your loyalty like it was guaranteed. I took credit for the stability you created. I let you pay for things while I spent money trying to impress someone else.”
My throat tightened.
Kyle looked down.
“And when you finally stood up for yourself, I tried to punish you for it.”
I didn't speak.
He continued.
“I filed that complaint because I was embarrassed.”
His voice broke.
“I wanted you to look unreasonable so nobody would look too closely at me.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“Why are you telling me this now?”
Kyle took a breath.
“Because I've spent months blaming everyone else.”
He looked at me.
“And I'm tired of lying.”
I studied him.
“Are you and Sophia still together?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“I'm sorry.”
He gave a sad smile.
“You don't have to be.”
We sat quietly.
Then he said, “I don't expect you to take me back.”
I nodded.
“Good.”
He laughed softly.
“I deserved that.”
I looked at him.
“Kyle, I hope you build a better life.”
His eyes filled.
“Thank you.”
I stood.
“But it won't be with me.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
I walked away feeling lighter.
May you like
Not because the apology erased what happened.
But because I no longer needed him to understand before I could move forward.
