Chapter 11 - THE JOB I HAD BEEN TOO AFRAID TO TAKE

Three months after Kyle moved out, Margaret Voss called me into her office.

I assumed it concerned the payroll audit.

Instead, she offered me a promotion.

Director of Payroll Integrity and Compliance.

I stared at her.

“Me?”

Margaret smiled.

“Yes, Eleanor. You.”

I looked at the job description.

The position included oversight of payroll controls, compliance training, and coordination with internal audit.

It was a significant step.

More responsibility.

Better pay.

A leadership role.

Everything I had wanted years earlier.

Everything Kyle had once told me would make our marriage difficult.

Margaret studied my face.

“What's wrong?”

I swallowed.

“Nothing.”

“Then why do you look terrified?”

I laughed softly.

“I haven't done something this big in a long time.”

Margaret leaned forward.

“You've been doing difficult things for years. You just haven't been getting credit for them.”

My eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

She smiled.

“Don't thank me yet. The department is a mess.”

I laughed.

“That sounds familiar.”

I accepted the promotion.

Then I went home and stood in the kitchen.

The house was quiet.

No television playing in the living room.

No Kyle complaining about dinner.

No sudden demand that I find a missing tie.

Just silence.

For the first time, I didn't find it lonely.

I found it peaceful.

That weekend, Clara and I painted the guest bedroom.

We chose a soft green.

I turned it into a home office.

I bought a new desk.

Hung my professional certificates on the wall.

Put fresh flowers by the window.

Then I framed a photograph from my first day at North Harbor.

I was younger.

Nervous.

Smiling.

I looked at that woman and whispered, “You made it.”

Not because I'd become wealthy.

May you like

Not because I'd won a divorce.

But because I had finally stopped shrinking my life to fit inside someone else's ambitions.
