Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE GATES OPENED

The first police vehicles arrived at 10:26.

Their lights flashed against the estate's iron gates.

Santino's men scattered.

Some dropped their weapons.

Others retreated toward the house.

Lorenzo remained inside the garage with Sophie and Isabella.

He followed the instructions given by responding officers and made sure his daughter was visible and safe.

Camila stood in the courtyard, shouting.

"This is my home!"

An officer approached.

She pointed toward the garage.

"My husband is dangerous!"

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Of course.

She would try to make him the villain.

He had given her plenty of material over the years.

His reputation was violent.

His business history complicated.

And he knew the authorities had reasons to distrust him.

But tonight, he had evidence.

The officers secured the scene.

Santino was detained.

Marco was questioned.

Camila demanded an attorney.

Lorenzo requested medical attention for Isabella and himself, given the suspected medication tampering.

At the hospital, Isabella refused to let go of Sophie's hand.

The little girl sat on the examination bed.

Her eyes were red.

"Daddy?"

Lorenzo approached.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Are we going home?"

He swallowed.

"Not tonight."

She looked frightened.

"Why?"

"Because we need to make sure everything is safe first."

Isabella nodded.

Then whispered:

"Can Miss Sophie stay?"

Lorenzo looked at Sophie.

She stood near the door, exhausted.

He smiled gently.

"If she wants to."

Sophie looked at Isabella.

Then nodded.

"I'll stay."

Later, Lorenzo met with investigators.

He provided the documents Sophie had recovered.

The receiver recordings.

The forged authorization.

The suspicious medication bottles.

And Sophie's account of Daniel Mercer's death.

The investigators explained that the evidence would need verification.

Some allegations were serious.

Others required further investigation.

Lorenzo understood.

He had spent years believing he could decide truth through force.

Now he was learning to let evidence speak.

At 3:12 a.m., Sophie sat beside a hospital vending machine.

Lorenzo found her there.

She held a paper cup of coffee.

Her hands trembled.

He sat beside her.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then he said:

"You saved my life."

Sophie looked down.

"I don't know that."

He smiled faintly.

"You warned me."

She swallowed.

"I almost didn't."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Why?"

Her eyes filled.

"Because I thought you'd kill me."

The words struck him harder than anything Camila had said.

He stared.

Sophie continued.

"You're Lorenzo Moretti."

He looked away.

"I know."

She swallowed.

"People are afraid of you."

He closed his eyes.

For the first time, he wondered how many people had been too frightened to tell him the truth.

He looked at Sophie.

"I'm sorry."

She studied him.

"For what?"

"For making you believe warning me was more dangerous than letting me die."

Her eyes filled.

Then she whispered:

May you like

"Thank you."

And for the first time since she'd entered his household, Sophie smiled.
