Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE SAVED

Sophie left her job at the Moretti estate six months after the night of the betrayal.
Lorenzo wasn't surprised.
He'd expected it.
She'd entered the house searching for answers.
Now she had a chance to rebuild her life.
She found work with a nonprofit organization that supported families affected by financial crime.
She also began studying for a professional certification in forensic accounting.
Lorenzo offered to help pay.
She refused.
Politely.
Firmly.
"I don't want to owe you anything," she said.
They were sitting in a small café.
Lorenzo smiled.
"You don't."
She studied him.
"Then why offer?"
"Because I can."
Sophie laughed softly.
"That's not always a good reason."
He nodded.
"You're right."
She looked surprised.
"You're agreeing with me?"
He smiled.
"I'm learning."
They began meeting for coffee.
Then dinner.
Then long walks beside the lake.
No bodyguards hovering over their shoulders.
No expensive gifts.
No grand declarations.
Just two people slowly learning who the other really was.
Sophie told him about Milwaukee.
Her childhood.
Her brother.
The years she'd spent trying to prove he hadn't taken his own life.
Lorenzo told her about his father.
His first business.
The mistakes he'd made.
The violence he'd once believed was necessary.
One evening, Sophie asked:
"Do you regret your life?"
Lorenzo thought for a long time.
"Parts of it."
She nodded.
"Which parts?"
He looked toward the lake.
"The parts where I mistook fear for loyalty."
Sophie studied him.
"And now?"
He smiled faintly.
"Now I'm trying to learn the difference."
She reached for his hand.
He looked down.
Her fingers were warm.
Steady.
He turned his hand and held hers.
Neither spoke.
They didn't need to.
That evening, Lorenzo walked Sophie to her apartment.
She stood in the doorway.
"Thank you for dinner."
He smiled.
"Thank you for coming."
She hesitated.
Then kissed his cheek.
Softly.
Quickly.
Lorenzo froze.
Sophie laughed.
"Goodnight, Enzo."
He smiled.
"Goodnight, Sophie."
He walked back to his car feeling something he hadn't felt in years.
Hope.
