Chapter 2 - The Badge and the Leather Portfolio

The bustling chatter of the packed dining room seemed to fade into a muffled hum.

The woman in the tailored charcoal suit stopped at the edge of Table Four. Her posture was razor-straight, radiating the cold, uncompromising authority of a federal prosecutor.

Andrew was in the middle of pouring vintage Pinot Noir into Vanessa’s glass. He glanced up, his charming smile lingering for half a second before his eyes caught the silver corporate security badge pinned to the jacket lapel of the man standing behind her.

The bottle in Andrew’s hand jerked. A splash of dark red wine stained the pristine white tablecloth.

“Andrew Bennett?” the woman asked in a clear, level voice that carried to the surrounding five tables.

Andrew cleared his throat, setting the bottle down with a forced, irritated chuckle. “Yes? Karen, right? From compliance? What is the meaning of this? I’m having a private dinner.”

“No, Mr. Bennett,” Karen Vance replied, unzipping the heavy leather portfolio. “You are currently on company-expensed client entertainment funds at a six-hundred-dollar tasting menu, claiming to be hosting the regional procurement board.”

Vanessa Mercer’s smile vanished. She withdrew her hand from Andrew’s arm as if she had touched a burning stove, reaching for her designer handbag.

“I think there’s a misunderstanding,” Vanessa said smoothly, adjusting her diamond tennis bracelet. “I’m just a friend—”

“You are Vanessa Mercer,” Karen interrupted without breaking eye contact. “Managing Director of Apex Logistics Group—a supplier currently undergoing an active forensic audit for $3.8 million in unverified supply invoices submitted directly to Mr. Bennett’s division.”

Vanessa’s face turned an ashen shade of grey.

Across the room, Daniel touched my elbow gently. “Sit down, Claire. Watch this.”

I sat back down, holding the vintage watch gift bag on my lap, feeling the sharp, burning shock in my chest crystallize into cold, absolute clarity.
