Chapter 9 - The Federal Gavel of Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 5B of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Julian Moretti and Dr. Vivian Vance.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery were Elena and myself.

Elena looked radiant, elegant, and beautiful in a tailored navy silk dress, holding hands with four-year-old Sophie, who was dressed in a pretty cream frock with a pink ribbon in her hair. In the secure VIP observation box, little Theo, Miles, and Nora were playing happily with soft plush toys under the care of certified pediatric nurses, completely healed, healthy, and thriving.

Julian Moretti and Vivian Vance sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet secured in heavy iron chains. Their former arrogance and high-society prestige had been utterly pulverized by six months in solitary detention.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

"Julian Moretti, Vivian Vance," Judge Sterling declared, her voice ringing through the stone chamber. "You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous plot of acoustic bio-terrorism against three defenseless infants for personal greed and corporate power."

Judge Sterling brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a resounding crack that resonated like thunder.

"Julian Moretti is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary, ADX Florence Supermax."

Julian collapsed forward onto the defense table, sobbing in broken, hopeless gasps as federal marshals secured his chains.

"Vivian Vance is sentenced to twenty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury, followed by the permanent, lifetime revocation of all medical credentials."

As the marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, Sophie looked up at me with her bright, innocent smile.

"Mr. Adrien?"

I knelt down on the stone floor, scooping Sophie into my arms. "Yes, little hero?"

May you like

"Are we going to get ice cream with the babies now?"

I smiled from the depths of my soul, kissing her cheek. "Yes, Sophie. As much ice cream as you want."
