Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Dismantled

================================================================================

On Friday morning at 10:00 AM, the 50th-floor boardroom of Aegis Biogen in Manhattan was holding an emergency meeting of its executive committee.

At seventy-one, Arthur Sterling sat at the head of the forty-foot glass table. He was a man of immaculate tailoring, with cold, predatory blue eyes, silver hair combed into razor perfection, and an aura of untouchable, aristocratic invulnerability.

“Gentlemen,” Arthur said smoothly, reviewing the morning financial tickers. “The minor operational disturbance at the Ohio hospital has been contained. Our legal firm has issued a sweeping press blackout. Within forty-eight hours, our new universal vaccine patent will be filed under our sole corporate seal.”

Before a single director could applaud, the heavy mahogany double doors blew inward with the thunder of a concussive breaching ram.

Twenty armed federal tactical agents swarmed the room, red laser sights painting the chests of twelve billionaire board members.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! HANDS ON THE TABLE!”

Arthur Sterling leaped to his feet, knocking his gold Montblanc pen onto the glass. “What is the meaning of this outrage?! I am Arthur Sterling! I am the personal advisor to the Secretary of Health! Who authorized this breach?!”

Special Agent Marcus Cole stepped through the doorway, holding a federal indictment bearing the gold seal of the United States Supreme Court.

“The Chief Justice of the United States authorized it, Arthur,” Agent Cole announced, his voice ringing through the glass tower.

Arthur sneered, his hands shaking with arrogant rage. “On what possible grounds?! My lawyers will have you stripped of your badge before lunch!”

“On the grounds of First-Degree Capital Murder, Biological Terrorism, and High Treason,” a clear, majestic voice echoed from the hallway.

The agents parted.

Walking through the doorway with the assistance of a polished carbon-fiber walking cane—her surgical knee fully repaired by the nation’s top orthopedic surgeons—was my mother.

She was dressed in an elegant ivory tailored suit, her posture regal, commanding, and radiating the brilliant, untouchable dignity of a queen returning to her throne.

Beside her walked myself, standing tall in a dark tailored blazer, looking straight into the eyes of the monster who had stolen my father’s life.

Arthur staggered backward, his face draining of every drop of color until he looked like damp chalk. His knees slammed into his leather executive chair.

“Althea...?” Arthur choked out, his voice cracking into a high, terrified rasp. “That’s... that’s impossible! You died in Zurich!”

My mother stopped two feet from the head of the table.

She slowly pulled back the cuff of her ivory silk sleeve, revealing the pale, pristine skin of her wrist, where the tiny blue flower had been transformed by laser restoration into a vibrant, brilliant sapphire bloom.

“David sent you a message, Arthur,” my mother said, her voice quiet, steady, and heavier than a mountain. “He told me to tell you that truth does not burn in gasoline.”

Two federal marshals stepped behind Arthur Sterling, twisted his manicured arms behind his back, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
