Chapter 3 - The Microfluidic Core

================================================================================

Dr. Hayes brought a rolling stainless steel mayo stand to the side of the bed. From beneath a sterile drape, he pulled out a handheld diagnostic scanner unlike anything I had ever seen in a civilian clinic. It had a titanium casing and an illuminated digital terminal displaying cryogenic encryption keys.

“We have very little time, Althea,” Dr. Hayes warned, his jaw tense. “The moment your hematology profile matched on the international medical registry, a mirror ping was mirrored to the Swiss server. If I received the alert, they received it too.”

“Aegis Biogen,” she said, the words tasting like poison on her tongue.

“Yes,” Dr. Hayes replied. “Arthur Sterling is still the Chairman. And he never stopped looking for what David took from the vault.”

I grabbed the edge of the bed. “Who is Arthur Sterling?”

“My brother-in-law,” my mother said, her eyes turning dark with sorrow. “Your father’s brother.”

She turned her wrist upward, offering it to Dr. Hayes.

“Twenty-six years ago,” my mother explained, her voice steady now, carrying the clinical precision of a veteran researcher, “David and I developed Project Panacea—a universal synthetic mRNA platform designed to neutralize all known coronaviruses and filoviruses. It was meant to be an open-source gift to global public health, funded by our family foundation.”

“What did Arthur do?” I asked, the pieces assembling into a terrifying mosaic.

“Arthur saw a multi-trillion-dollar monopoly,” Dr. Hayes answered for her. “He altered the clinical protocols in the dark. He ordered the engineering of an aggressive synthetic pathogen—a binary virus that could be released into emerging markets, alongside the exclusive sale of our patented cure. When David discovered the altered strains and refused to surrender the master synthesis keys, Arthur had the laboratory’s gas lines severed.”

My mother flinched, a silent sob catching in her throat. “David managed to override the security airlocks from the inside. He sealed himself in the burning containment bay so I could escape through the cryogenic service shaft with you in my arms. You were only six months old, Julian.”

“And the flower?” I whispered, staring at her wrist.

“Before I ran, David used the micro-engraver to inject the complete genetic blueprint of the true universal vaccine into my subcutaneous tissue,” she said, touching the blue petals. “The microfluidic channels were suspended in organic vegetable ink to mimic a tattoo. It requires a bio-resonance key and my specific DNA pulse to unlock the data.”

Dr. Hayes placed the titanium scanner flat against the flower.

BEEP.

A high-pitched acoustic resonance hummed from the device. Beneath her skin, the green lines shifted, assembling into a dense, three-dimensional matrix of light that cast a fluorescent shadow across the sterile white walls.
