Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO POISONED LUCA

Vincent contacted Luca three days later.

Not by phone.

He walked into the old Costello social club at noon.

Alone.

He knew Luca would hear.

He sat at Antonio Costello's old table.

Ordered espresso.

Waited.

Luca came with Marco.

No weapons visible.

Federal agents watched from outside.

Vincent noticed.

"Police?"

"Federal."

"You disgrace your father."

Luca wheeled to the table.

"My father is dead."

"His rules aren't."

"Apparently his rules nearly killed me."

Vincent's eyes hardened.

"You think I poisoned you."

"I know you bought the compound."

Silence.

"Vale talked."

"Vale is weak."

"Vale is alive."

Vincent smiled without humor.

"You've changed."

"Maya."

"That child made you sentimental."

"That child noticed what eleven years of doctors ignored."

Vincent leaned back.

"Your body failed."

"No."

Luca placed the toxicology report on the table.

"You failed."

Vincent didn't touch it.

Then Luca put down the purchase records.

Shell company.

Date.

Signature.

Payment.

Vincent's face remained still.

Finally:

"I didn't intend twelve years."

There it was.

Marco inhaled sharply.

Luca felt almost calm.

"What did you intend?"

"Months."

"For what?"

"To force a transition."

"You poisoned me to win a board meeting?"

"Don't reduce it."

"Then improve it."

Vincent's voice sharpened.

"Your father destroyed this family choosing you over me."

"He chose me because you were reckless."

"He chose bloodline."

"We have the same blood."

Vincent struck the table.

People looked over.

He lowered his voice.

"I spent twenty-five years fixing Antonio's mistakes. Then he died and handed everything to a thirty-six-year-old who thought legitimacy meant weakness."

Luca stared.

"You poisoned me because I wanted fewer bodies."

"I slowed you down because you were dismantling power."

"You paralyzed me."

"For six months."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Vincent finally looked uneasy.

"The dose was designed to wear off."

"Then why didn't it?"

"Because Vale changed the regimen."

That was new.

"What regimen?"

"Pain medication."

Luca froze.

Vale had continued giving Luca a drug after the original poisoning.

Not the same compound.

A second agent.

Low-dose.

Designed to preserve symptoms.

Vale hadn't merely falsified records.

He had continued the paralysis.

Eleven years.

Vincent said:

"I told him to stop after the first year."

"Why didn't you?"

"I didn't know he continued."

Luca almost laughed.

"You expect me to believe you grew a conscience?"

"I had what I wanted."

"What?"

"You became cautious."

Luca understood.

The wheelchair changed him.

Less field involvement.

Fewer personal inspections.

More delegation.

Vincent profited.

But killing Luca would trigger instability.

Keeping him disabled created a perfect figurehead.

Except Luca was stronger than Vincent expected.

He ruled anyway.

"Why kidnap Maya?"

Vincent looked away.

"Insurance."

"Against what?"

"You."

"She's nine."

"I knew you wouldn't risk her."

Luca's fingers tightened.

"That was your last mistake."

Vincent smiled.

"You won't kill me with federal agents outside."

"No."

Luca leaned forward.

"That's the point."

Vincent's smile faded.

Federal agents entered.

He stood.

"You're giving me to them?"

"Yes."

"For family business?"

"For poisoning me, kidnapping my daughter, and corrupting medical records."

Vincent looked genuinely wounded.

As though Luca had violated something sacred.

"You are a Costello."

"Exactly."

Vincent was arrested.

The room remained quiet after they took him.

Marco sat across from Luca.

"You okay?"

"No."

"Good."

Luca looked at him.

Marco shrugged.

"Maya says that when people lie."

Luca laughed despite himself.

Vale was arrested the next morning.

His clinic records revealed long-term administration of a nerve-suppressing medication disguised inside Luca's chronic pain treatment.

Rebecca estimated cessation could improve recovery.

Not guarantee walking.

Improve.

That was enough.

Luca returned to physical therapy.

This time he had a new target.

Not walking across a ballroom.

Not proving anything.

One step.

A real step.

It came three weeks later.

Parallel bars.

Danielle beside him.

Maya at the end.

Elena near the wall.

Luca stood with braces.

Weight forward.

Left foot moved.

Barely.

Half an inch.

Then forward.

One step.

His body shook.

Maya's mouth opened.

Luca moved the right.

Less.

But enough.

Second step.

Then he collapsed into the harness.

Everyone cried.

Including Marco.

He denied it.

Maya ran forward.

"You walked!"

"Two steps."

May you like

"That's walking."

Technically, she was right again.
