Chapter 6 - THE DINNER WHERE EVERYTHING WAS SAID OUT LOUD

Dad arranged the dinner.
Neutral restaurant.
Private room.
My parents.
Chloe.
Marcus.
Robert.
Ethan.
David Vance.
Me.
I almost refused.
Then Chloe asked me to come.
Not demanded.
Asked.
That mattered.
---
Marcus entered already angry.
“What is this?”
Robert answered:
“Sit down.”
Marcus looked at me.
“This her idea?”
“No,” Dad said.
That surprised everyone.
Dad continued.
“Mine.”
Marcus sat.
For the first time, Jonathan Marsh looked like the colonel I remembered.
But he did not command.
He spoke.
“I failed both my daughters last week.”
Chloe looked down.
I watched him.
“I let a man humiliate Zariah because I prioritized keeping Chloe's engagement comfortable.”
Marcus rolled his eyes.
Robert saw it.
That mattered.
Dad continued.
“And I allowed Chloe to believe avoiding conflict was the same as keeping peace.”
Then Robert spoke.
“I've done something similar.”
Marcus looked over.
Robert's voice hardened.
“I've paid your gambling debts twice.”
Chloe's head snapped around.
“Your what?”
Marcus went pale.
Ethan slid the statements across the table.
Chloe read.
Then looked at Marcus.
“Three hundred thousand?”
“It's handled.”
“No.”
Ethan answered.
“It isn't.”
Marcus glared.
“Stay out of this.”
Chloe laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You told me you had investment losses.”
“Technically—”
“You gamble?”
“Not like that.”
“Three hundred thousand dollars!”
Marcus turned toward her.
“And you owe nothing?”
Silence.
His face changed.
“What?”
Chloe looked at me.
I did not rescue her.
She whispered:
“Eighty-six thousand.”
Marcus stared.
“For what?”
“The wedding.”
Robert closed his eyes.
Marcus shouted:
“You said your sister was covering part!”
“Ten thousand.”
He turned to me.
“Then cover the rest.”
The entire table went silent.
There it was.
No shame.
No request.
An order.
I said:
“No.”
Marcus laughed.
“You make six figures plus allowances, pension track, investments—”
“How do you know my finances?”
Chloe froze.
Marcus looked at her.
She had told him.
Not exact numbers.
Enough.
I felt betrayed.
Again.
But this time Chloe spoke before I could.
“I told him because he kept asking.”
“That doesn't excuse it.”
“I know.”
Good.
---
Marcus stood.
“This family is insane.”
David finally said:
“No, Marcus. You're simply experiencing a room where nobody is solving your problems.”
Robert looked at his son.
“I am done paying your debts.”
Marcus went white.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“You can't.”
“I can.”
“You'll let lenders come after me?”
“They are your lenders.”
Marcus looked toward Chloe.
“Then we need to get married before—”
He stopped.
Everyone heard it.
Before what?
Before Robert cut him off?
Before Chloe discovered the truth?
Before gifts?
Before access?
Chloe stared.
“Before what, Marcus?”
He didn't answer.
She removed her engagement ring.
Placed it on the table.
His face changed.
“Don't.”
She slid it toward him.
“I can't marry you.”
He stood so fast the chair fell backward.
“You're humiliating me.”
Chloe laughed through tears.
That sentence.
Of course.
He reached for her arm.
I rose.
So did Dad.
So did Ethan.
So did Robert.
Four people.
Marcus stopped.
Not because I had rank.
Not because Dad was a Marine.
Because for once, everyone around him refused to pretend his anger deserved accommodation.
Chloe stepped backward.
“Don't touch me.”
He looked around the room.
Then left.
May you like
Nobody followed.
That was the end of the engagement.
