Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO LEARNED TO LISTEN

Aurelio Ferrante had spent most of his life believing power meant control.

Control of contracts.

Control of people.

Control of outcomes.

Marin challenged that belief.

Not with speeches.

With questions.

Why did employees need permission to report safety problems?

Why were complaints routed through managers who might be responsible for them?

Why did workers fear losing their jobs if they raised concerns?

Aurelio listened.

Sometimes reluctantly.

Sometimes defensively.

But he listened.

Together with independent specialists, the company developed clearer reporting procedures and worker protections.

The changes weren't glamorous.

They didn't make headlines.

But they mattered.

One evening, Marin stayed late reviewing a report.

Aurelio appeared at her door.

“Still working?”

She looked up.

“Unfortunately.”

He smiled.

“Dinner?”

She hesitated.

He added quickly:

“Not a business meeting.”

Marin stared.

Aurelio looked suddenly uncomfortable.

“I mean—”

She laughed.

“Are you asking me on a date?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Then say that.”

He took a breath.

“Marin Halloway, would you have dinner with me?”

She considered him.

Then said:

“Yes.”

Aurelio smiled.

“But,” she added, “we need to talk about the fact that you're my boss.”

He nodded immediately.

“Agreed.”

They worked with human resources to establish appropriate boundaries and reporting arrangements so Marin's career wouldn't depend on their relationship.

Only then did they go to dinner.

Not at the Corrant.

At a small restaurant near the harbor.

No private room.

No bodyguards at the table.

Just two people talking.

Marin told him about her mother.

About Dez.

About Gus.

Aurelio told her about his father.

About Garrett.

About the loneliness of growing up surrounded by people who wanted something.

For the first time in years, he felt like someone was interested in who he was without the title.

And Marin realized the man she'd once feared had begun becoming someone she could trust.
