Chapter 10 - THE BROTHER WHO REMEMBERED THE SONG

A week later, Marin visited Dez.

He was sitting beside the window.

The wooden sailboat rested in his lap.

She sat beside him.

“Hey.”

He looked up.

For a moment, his eyes were distant.

Then he smiled.

“Rin.”

She laughed softly.

“That's me.”

He looked toward the sailboat.

“Dad.”

Marin nodded.

“Yeah.”

Then Dez began humming.

A simple tune.

Four notes.

Then five.

Marin froze.

It was the song their mother used to hum while cooking.

Their mother, who had never heard a sound, had learned the melody through vibration and memory from the family who raised her.

She used to hum it imperfectly.

But Dez had loved it.

Marin joined him.

They hummed together.

For a moment, he looked directly at her.

“Don't cry.”

She laughed through tears.

“I'm trying.”

He reached for her hand.

Then whispered:

“You came back.”

Marin closed her eyes.

“I always will.”

Later, she met with the facility's financial counselor.

Aurelio had offered to cover Dez's bills.

Marin had refused.

But he had connected her with an independent nonprofit that reviewed medical debt and insurance denials.

The counselor explained that some charges might be eligible for appeal or financial assistance.

It wouldn't erase everything.

But it could help.

Marin listened carefully.

For the first time in years, the debt felt like a problem with possible steps instead of a wall she couldn't climb.

That evening, she called Gus.

“Guess what?”

He grunted.

“What?”

“I'm not drowning quite as fast.”

Gus laughed.

“Good.”

She smiled.

Then he said:

“Come Saturday. Seven sharp.”

May you like

Marin laughed.

“Wouldn't miss it.”
