Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE CITY ALMOST WENT DARK

Rachel did not go to the testing facility.

That was the first sensible decision she'd made in days.

Instead, she gave the address to investigators.

Then went back to work.

She had spent years proving she belonged in rooms where men underestimated her.

She wasn't going to throw that away by pretending to be a police officer.

But she did study the facility's electrical records.

And what she found frightened her.

The property had once been connected to a private distribution network serving several industrial buildings.

Most of those connections had been decommissioned.

One remained.

A high-capacity feed.

Rachel called Priya.

“Look at this.”

Priya studied the diagram.

Then frowned.

“Why is that still active?”

“Exactly.”

They contacted the utility company.

The utility confirmed the feed was energized but isolated from the public distribution network through protected switching equipment.

Rachel felt a small measure of relief.

It couldn't shut down Chicago.

But it could create a dangerous localized failure.

And perhaps destroy evidence.

***

Adrien listened as Rachel explained.

“Vincent may be planning to destroy the facility,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because there may be records or equipment there.”

Adrien looked at her.

“Can he do it?”

“Anyone can damage equipment. The question is whether he's willing to risk lives.”

Adrien's expression darkened.

“He is.”

Rachel nodded.

“Then the utility and fire department need to know.”

They did.

That evening, investigators moved on the facility.

Rachel remained at Reichi Tower.

She watched updates arrive through official channels.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated.

Answered.

“Rachel Morgan.”

A familiar voice.

Vincent Caruso.

“Your father was a difficult man.”

Rachel went cold.

She said nothing.

Vincent continued.

“He could have taken the money.”

Rachel's hands shook.

“He refused.”

“Yes.”

“Because he knew what you were doing.”

Vincent laughed softly.

“He thought principles could protect him.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Where are you?”

“You know where.”

She looked toward the window.

Chicago glittered below.

Vincent continued.

“Tell Adrien to stop cooperating.”

Rachel swallowed.

“Why?”

“Because I have recordings he doesn't want released.”

Rachel thought of the archive.

The thousands of files.

The secrets.

The power.

Then she asked:

“Why are you calling me?”

Vincent was silent.

She continued.

“Because you think I'm easier to frighten?”

He laughed.

“Because your father made the same mistake.”

Rachel felt anger rise.

Then steadied herself.

“My father documented what you did.”

Silence.

“And so have I.”

Vincent's voice hardened.

“You don't understand who you're dealing with.”

Rachel looked at the phone.

Then said:

“I understand exactly.”

She ended the call.

Immediately, she contacted Keene.

***

The facility operation ended before midnight.

Vincent was arrested.

Eric Vale was also located and detained.

No explosion occurred.

No citywide blackout.

No dramatic destruction.

Just investigators doing their jobs.

Rachel sat on her couch when the news arrived.

Owen looked at her.

“Is it over?”

She considered.

“Not completely.”

“But he's caught?”

“Yes.”

Owen nodded.

Then leaned against her.

For a long time, they sat quietly.

***

Adrien arrived the next morning.

Not at her apartment.

At her workshop.

Rachel was repairing a damaged motor controller when he entered.

He stood near the door.

She looked up.

“You're early.”

“I wanted to see you.”

She smiled faintly.

“That's suspicious.”

He approached.

“Vincent is in custody.”

“I heard.”

“Investigators recovered additional records.”

“Good.”

Adrien hesitated.

Rachel noticed.

“What?”

He looked at her.

“Some of the recordings implicate me.”

Silence.

Rachel set down her screwdriver.

“In what?”

“Meetings. Financial decisions. Things I should have questioned.”

She looked at him.

“Did you commit crimes?”

Adrien didn't answer immediately.

Then:

“I made decisions that helped the organization continue.”

Rachel felt cold.

“Even after you knew what it was?”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

Silence.

She stared at him.

For weeks, she'd watched him change.

But change didn't erase the past.

She stood.

“Then you need to tell investigators.”

“I have.”

She stopped.

Adrien looked at her.

“I don't know what they'll do with it.”

Rachel swallowed.

“Neither do I.”

He nodded.

Then said:

“I won't ask you to wait.”

She looked at him.

“Good.”

His expression tightened.

Rachel continued.

“Because if we have a future, it can't be built on me pretending your past doesn't matter.”

Adrien nodded.

“I know.”

She stepped closer.

“But I also won't decide you're incapable of becoming someone better.”

He looked at her.

Hope moved across his face.

May you like

Rachel took his hand.

“That's something you'll have to prove.”
