Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE WALLS

Vincent Caruso disappeared before investigators could arrest him.
One morning, he failed to arrive at Reichi Tower.
His phone was disconnected.
His home was empty.
His private aircraft remained in its hangar.
His bank accounts showed no unusual withdrawals.
It was as though he had stepped out of the city.
Rachel didn't believe it.
People like Vincent didn't disappear without preparation.
They left systems behind.
Money.
People.
Instructions.
And perhaps one final trap.
***
Rachel and Priya continued tracing the hidden network.
Most devices had been removed.
But the independent fiber route remained.
It led through service shafts, mechanical floors, and a concealed communications room beneath the tower.
The room had not appeared on the final building plans.
Rachel stood before the sealed door.
“Of course.”
Priya looked at her.
“What?”
“Another secret room.”
“Rich people love them.”
Rachel laughed.
Then became serious.
The door required specialized access.
They did not force it.
Instead, they contacted investigators and arranged a supervised opening.
Inside were racks of servers.
Storage arrays.
Backup power systems.
Cooling equipment.
A fully operational data center.
Rachel stared.
“This isn't just recording equipment.”
Priya nodded.
“It's the archive.”
Years of private conversations.
Meetings.
Transactions.
Confessions.
Secrets.
Enough information to control half the city.
Rachel felt sick.
***
Federal investigators secured the room.
Digital-forensics teams began preserving the data.
Adrien stood beside Rachel as technicians worked.
He looked at the servers.
“My father built this.”
Rachel nodded.
“Vincent expanded it.”
“And I inherited it without knowing.”
She looked at him.
“Maybe.”
He turned.
“Maybe?”
Rachel met his eyes.
“You inherited a company. That doesn't automatically make you responsible for every hidden circuit.”
He looked relieved.
Then she continued.
“But once you know, what you do next is your responsibility.”
Adrien nodded.
“I know.”
***
The archive contained thousands of recordings.
Some were mundane.
Business meetings.
Hotel conferences.
Private dinners.
Others were disturbing.
Conversations used to extort money.
Threats.
Deals.
Evidence of corruption.
But one recording mattered more to Rachel than all the others.
A video from the night her father died.
Thomas Morgan entered the warehouse office.
Vincent Caruso stood beside the door.
Leon Reichi sat at a table.
Rachel watched with Detective Keene.
Her father looked angry.
Not frightened.
Angry.
He placed a folder on the table.
“I won't sign it.”
Leon leaned back.
“You're making this difficult.”
Thomas shook his head.
“You're using the building to record people without consent.”
Vincent smiled.
“It's private security.”
“No. It's blackmail.”
Silence.
Leon stood.
“Careful.”
Thomas looked at him.
“I've already copied the plans.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Her father continued.
“If anything happens to me, someone will find them.”
Vincent's expression changed.
Leon looked at him.
Then said:
“Take care of this.”
The recording ended.
Rachel stared at the blank screen.
For a moment, she couldn't breathe.
Keene gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Rachel.”
She shook her head.
“There's more.”
Keene looked at the technician.
The next file began.
A corridor camera.
Thomas leaving the office.
Vincent following.
Then the auxiliary distribution room.
A technician entered.
Not Thomas.
Another man.
He opened a panel.
Made adjustments.
Then left.
Minutes later, Thomas entered.
The explosion followed.
Rachel stopped breathing.
It wasn't an accident.
Someone had altered the equipment before her father arrived.
She looked at Keene.
“Who was the technician?”
Keene's expression hardened.
“We're identifying him.”
Rachel stared at the screen.
Her father had walked into a trap.
And someone had made it look like electrical failure.
***
That night, Rachel went home.
Owen was waiting.
She told him.
Everything.
Not every technical detail.
Enough.
He cried.
Then became angry.
Then quiet.
Finally, he asked:
“Did Dad know?”
Rachel thought about the video.
“He knew something was wrong.”
“Then why did he go into the room?”
Rachel swallowed.
“Because he thought someone might get hurt.”
Owen looked down.
“He always did that.”
“Yes.”
Rachel smiled through tears.
“He always did.”
***
Two days later, investigators identified the technician.
A former contractor named Eric Vale.
He had worked for Caruso Infrastructure Services.
He disappeared shortly after Thomas Morgan's death.
But the archive contained payment records.
Large transfers.
Regular deposits.
And one recent transaction.
Three days earlier.
To an account connected to a property outside Chicago.
Rachel looked at the address.
Then at Keene.
“Is that where Vincent is?”
Keene hesitated.
“We're checking.”
Rachel nodded.
But something about the address bothered her.
It was near an old industrial district.
The same area where her father died.
She looked again.
Then realized.
The property wasn't a residence.
It was a former electrical equipment testing facility.
May you like
And if Vincent had gone there, he might not be hiding.
He might be preparing to destroy something.
