Chapter 10 - The Lantern Lit

One year after the incident on King Street.
The evening sky over Bloomsbury was a deep, velvet indigo speckled with the first bright stars of summer.
Inside The Paper Lantern, the lights were dimmed to an ambient amber glow. A private celebratory dinner had been arranged in the central reading courtyard to mark the first anniversary of the shop’s rebirth.
Elena sat at the head of the long oak table, laughing as she described a disastrous sailing trip she and Roman had taken as teenagers. Across from her sat Dr. Evans, the foundation’s medical director, and the shop’s dedicated staff members.
Claire stood near the open French doors leading out to the small herb garden, listening to the laughter, the clinking of wine glasses, and the soft rustle of book pages being turned in the quiet corner alcoves.
A warm, heavy jacket was gently draped over her shoulders against the evening chill.
She turned to find Roman standing beside her, holding two glasses of sparkling vintage cider.
"They're having a wonderful time," Claire murmured, leaning slightly into his side.
"They have a wonderful home to celebrate in," Roman replied, handing her a glass.
He looked down at her. In the soft light of the courtyard lanterns, she looked radiant—strong, grounded, and completely at peace with the life she had built from courage and hard work.
Roman turned slightly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unwavering certainty.
"I spent years believing that the only way to protect the people I love was through control," Roman said, his voice low and steady. "Through contracts, surveillance, lawyers, and iron walls. Until I watched a woman with nothing to her name throw her livelihood on the line for someone she had never met."
Claire looked up, her breath catching in her throat.
"You taught me that real strength isn't about building higher walls, Claire," Roman continued, reaching out to gently cup her cheek with his warm palm. "It’s about opening the door and having the courage to stand in the doorway."
Claire rested her hand over his, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath his skin.
"Then stay in the doorway with me," Claire whispered.
Roman leaned down, closing the distance between them, and kissed her under the warm glow of the lanterns—a deep, tender promise forged in the crucible of integrity, loyalty, and undeniable love.

Inside the shop, Elena raised her glass in a silent, knowing toast toward the garden doors.
The storm was long gone. The bullies had faded into their own manufactured silence. And in the heart of London, The Paper Lantern burned bright and unbroken—a sanctuary built for everyone who had ever refused to look away.
