Chapter 15 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO TAUGHT A MAFIA BOSS TO REST

Two years later, the Rose Conservatory was filled with laughter.
Children ran between the flowerbeds.
Veterans tended raised planters.
Families gathered beneath the glass roof.
The conservatory had become one of the most respected community programs in the Hudson Valley.
Mara directed its activities.
Ruby, now ten, considered herself the unofficial president of the roses.
And Mateo?
Mateo had changed.
He still ran a large freight business.
But the company had undergone major reforms.
He had reduced his involvement in dangerous operations.
Established stronger oversight.
And learned that leadership did not require everyone to fear him.
Most importantly, he slept.
Not perfectly.
Not every night.
But enough.
He no longer believed rest was weakness.
On a warm spring afternoon, Mateo stood beside the white rose.
Ruby approached carrying a watering can.
"Mr. Mateo?"
He smiled.
"Yes?"
"Lady Thundercloud has three flowers now."
He nodded.
"She's doing well."
Ruby smiled proudly.
"Patience."
Mateo laughed.
"Yes. Patience."
Mara approached.
She wore a pale green dress.
Her hair was loose around her shoulders.
Mateo looked at her.
"Ready?"
She smiled.
"For what?"
He reached into his pocket.
A small velvet box.
Mara froze.
Ruby gasped.
"Oh!"
Mateo knelt.
"Mara Brooks."
Her eyes filled.
"Two years ago, I was a man who had forgotten how to live."
He looked toward Ruby.
"Your daughter reminded me how to rest."
Then back at Mara.
"And you reminded me how to stay."
Tears slipped down Mara's cheeks.
Mateo opened the box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
"Will you marry me?"
Mara laughed through tears.
"Yes."
Ruby screamed.
Then covered her mouth.
"Sorry! Too loud!"
Mateo burst out laughing.
He stood and embraced Mara.
Ruby wrapped her arms around both of them.
And beneath the glass roof of the Rose Conservatory, the three of them held each other.
Later that afternoon, Mateo sat in Elias's old wicker chair.
Mara sat beside him.
Ruby watered the roses.
The sun moved slowly across the floor.
Mateo closed his eyes.
For a moment, he heard the faint sound of rain in his memory.
Then Ruby whispered:
"Mom."
Mara looked over.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
Ruby smiled.
"Don't wake him."
Mara looked at Mateo.
His breathing was slow.
His shoulders relaxed.
His hands rested open on his knees.
He was asleep.
Peacefully.
Just as he had been the first day Ruby found him.
Mara smiled.
"You're right."
Ruby nodded.
"He looks like he really needs it."
Mara looked at the man she loved.
Then at her daughter.
And whispered:
"Yes, sweetheart."
"He does."
Outside, the roses bloomed.
May you like
Inside, the man who had once ruled through fear finally rested without it.
And the little girl who had once told three armed guards not to wake him had become part of the family he never knew he needed.
