Chapter 12 - THE CONSERVATORY THAT ALMOST DISAPPEARED

The foundation board met on a cold December morning.

The proposed sale of the conservatory was on the agenda.

Mateo arrived carrying a thick folder.

Silas Greco's name had been removed from the board.

Independent auditors had completed their review.

The financial irregularities were documented.

The proposed buyer's connections had been disclosed.

Mateo stood before the board.

"This conservatory is not for sale."

One board member frowned.

"Mr. Varela, the property is valuable."

Mateo nodded.

"Yes."

"We could generate significant revenue."

Mateo looked around.

"At what cost?"

Silence.

He continued.

"My brother built this place for people who needed somewhere to heal."

He opened the folder.

"Veterans. Children. Families. People who had nowhere else to go."

He looked at the board.

"We nearly destroyed it because we stopped measuring its value in human terms."

The room remained silent.

Then Mateo announced a new plan.

The conservatory would remain protected under a revised charitable trust.

Its finances would be independently audited.

Community programs would be restored.

And Mara Brooks would lead the expansion.

The board approved the plan.

When Mateo returned to the conservatory, Ruby was waiting.

"Did you save Lady Thundercloud?"

He smiled.

"Yes."

Ruby threw her arms around him.

"I knew you could!"

Mateo hugged her gently.

Then looked at Mara.

May you like

She was smiling through tears.

For the first time in years, Mateo felt proud of something that had nothing to do with fear.
