Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT VICTOR MADE HIS MOVE

Victor Cross struck three nights later.
Not with gunmen.
With money.
He froze accounts connected to Julian's legitimate businesses.
Bribed two senior executives.
And attempted to seize control of Cross Holdings through a fraudulent emergency board resolution.
Julian had anticipated some of it.
But not all.
Margaret arrived at his office carrying a folder.
“Victor's moving.”
Julian looked up.
“How far?”
“Far enough to hurt us.”
Marco entered.
“We also have confirmation that Victor ordered the attack on your SUV.”
Julian's eyes darkened.
“Proof?”
“An intercepted communication and a witness willing to cooperate.”
Julian stood.
“Then we go to the authorities.”
Margaret stared.
“Julian?”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“You're serious?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“You know what that means.”
Julian nodded.
“It means everything comes out.”
Including his own past.
The violence.
The corruption.
The deals he'd made.
The people he'd protected.
For years, Julian had believed that admitting wrongdoing was weakness.
Now he understood that hiding the truth had cost too much.
He looked at Margaret.
“I'm done protecting Victor.”
May you like
Then he picked up his phone.
“And I'm done protecting the man I used to be.”
