Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE OWNED

Months passed.

The criminal investigation continued.

Vincent and Dr. Sloane faced prosecution.

Blackridge Medical Center implemented reforms under external scrutiny.

Elise remained a nurse.

She refused offers to become Adrian's private medical adviser.

She also refused expensive gifts.

Their relationship developed slowly.

They shared meals.

Walked along the lake.

Spent quiet evenings reading.

Adrian learned to respect her schedule.

Elise learned that accepting affection did not mean surrendering independence.

One evening, they stood on the balcony of Adrian's apartment.

Chicago glittered beneath them.

Adrian took her hand.

"Elise."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

"I love you."

Her breath caught.

He continued.

"I don't expect you to say it back."

She smiled faintly.

"Good."

He laughed softly.

"I know you need time."

Elise looked toward the city.

Then back at him.

"I do love you."

Adrian went still.

She smiled.

"But I'm not becoming part of your empire."

His expression softened.

"I know."

"I'm keeping my career."

"I wouldn't ask you to leave it."

"And if you ever try to control me—"

"You'll tell me no."

She laughed.

"Exactly."

Adrian leaned closer.

"Can I kiss you?"

Elise smiled.

May you like

"Yes."

And beneath the Chicago skyline, she kissed the man who had once frightened an entire hospital simply by entering a room.
