Chương 7 - THE MAN EVERYONE ELSE STILL FEARED

Roman’s world changed too.
Not magically.
He remained Roman Carter.
Men still lowered their voices.
Companies still carried his name.
There were still parts of his empire I preferred not to understand.
But the divorce forced questions.
How many people followed instructions because they respected Roman?
How many because they feared him?
How often did he call control protection?
He replaced his family law counsel entirely.
Created policies preventing security from tracking adult family members without explicit consent unless there was an immediate documented threat.
Margaret laughed when she heard.
“Imagine inventing permission at forty-two.”
Roman did not find that amusing.
I did.
More importantly, he began stepping away from several businesses built around intimidation.
Not because I demanded it.
I did not design his conscience.
He had to.
One evening, during a parenting exchange, Roman asked:
“Do you think I’m a bad man?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He seemed surprised.
“I think you've done bad things.”
Different.
“I think you got used to believing love gave you authority.”
His face tightened.
“And?”
“That made you a bad husband.”
He nodded.
Painfully.
“But Noelle?”
“You can become whatever kind of father your choices make you.”
He looked at our daughter sleeping in his arms.
“What if I fail?”
I almost smiled.
“Then apologize. Learn. Try again.”
May you like
Roman Carter looked genuinely confused by the concept.
Progress.
