Chương 4 - THE FILE ABOUT ME

I stayed in the hospital four days.

Roman visited when invited.

Never otherwise.

That should not have felt remarkable.

It did.

Noelle slept badly.

So did I.

Breastfeeding hurt.

My body felt like it belonged to someone else.

Margaret stayed nearby.

Roman arranged nothing without asking.

Food?

“Can I send dinner?”

“Yes.

Nurse?

“Do you want private overnight help?”

“No.

Security?

“Can I keep two men downstairs?”

“One. Not on this floor.”

“Okay.”

Every yes or no became practice.

Then Dana called.

“We received initial disclosure.”

Divorce had moved quickly because Roman instructed his attorney not to contest service.

“There’s something you should see.”

My stomach tightened.

“What now?”

A file.

Prepared by Roman’s family attorney, Charles Wren.

Title:

MATERNAL STABILITY / SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS.

I read.

Prenatal appointments.

Dates I left the estate.

One afternoon I spent three hours at a friend’s house.

A shopping trip.

The childbirth class Roman missed.

A note from security:

Mrs. Carter appeared visibly upset when returning.

Another:

Subject departed without advance schedule notification.

Subject.

I stopped breathing.

Then a section titled:

Potential Custody Considerations

Emotional stress during pregnancy.

“Heightened reactivity.”

Temporary relocation from marital residence.

Dependence on household staff.

I wanted to vomit.

“They were building a custody file.”

Dana answered carefully.

“It looks like counsel was preparing one.”

“Did Roman ask for this?”

“We don't know yet.”

I sent the entire file to him.

Then called.

He answered immediately.

“What is this?”

Silence.

“I just received it.”

“Did you order it?”

“No.”

I laughed.

“Your security team monitored me.”

“Yes.”

“Your lawyer has my prenatal movements.”

“Security reports are routine.”

“Roman.”

He stopped.

“Did you tell Wren to prepare custody options?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him to protect your parental position?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

There.

“How?”

“I said I wanted everything prepared in case the separation became hostile.”

“Hostile.”

My voice shook.

“I was still decorating the nursery.”

“I know.”

“You were already preparing to fight me over the baby.”

“No.”

“Then why does a lawyer have a file describing me as emotionally unstable?”

“I didn't authorize that.”

“But you created the assignment.”

He said nothing.

I continued:

“You told people to protect you from me before I even knew there was something to fight about.”

“Savannah.”

“No.”

Noelle stirred beside me.

I lowered my voice.

“You built a system where your lawyers assumed the pregnant wife would become a threat once she learned the truth.”

Roman sounded sick.

“I'll fire Wren.”

“That fixes Wren.”

Silence.

“Who fixes you?”

He had no answer.

Good.

I ended the call.

Roman did fire Wren.

Same day.

Then something happened I did not expect.

He sent Dana a signed directive releasing every security report involving me.

No privilege games.

No missing pages.

No political pressure.

He also terminated automatic location monitoring associated with my vehicle, phone and estate access credentials.

Then he transferred control of the security detail assigned to Noelle and me to an independent firm selected by Dana.

Not his men.

Not his command.

His message said:

You should choose who protects you.

I stared.

That was the first apology he made with behavior instead of words.

May you like

It still did not make me want him back.

Those are different things.
