Chapter 12 - THE DAUGHTER WHO FINALLY CAME HOME

Elena Cole recovered slowly.

The years she'd spent hidden had left scars.

Some visible.

Most not.

She began working with doctors and trauma specialists.

She also gave investigators a full statement.

Her testimony helped clarify how she'd been threatened into disappearing after Thomas's death.

For years, she'd been moved between locations.

Controlled through fear.

Told that contacting me would put my life in danger.

Now she was free.

But freedom didn't erase eleven years.

Our relationship was complicated.

I loved her.

I was angry with her.

I missed her.

I didn't know how to trust her.

Sometimes we talked for hours.

Sometimes I couldn't bear to be in the same room.

She understood.

One afternoon, we sat in a small park near the hospital.

Autumn leaves covered the ground.

Elena looked at me.

"I don't expect you to forgive me quickly."

I stared.

She continued.

"I just want a chance to know you."

My eyes filled.

I looked down.

"I'm not thirteen anymore."

She smiled sadly.

"I know."

"You missed everything."

Tears slid down her cheeks.

"I know."

I swallowed.

"Graduation. My first job. My first apartment."

She nodded.

"I know."

My voice broke.

"And all the nights I thought you didn't want me."

Elena began crying.

"Oh, Maya."

I shook my head.

"I know now that you were threatened."

She nodded.

"But I still felt abandoned."

She reached toward me.

Then stopped.

"May I hold your hand?"

I looked at her.

For a moment, I wanted to pull away.

Then I nodded.

She took my hand.

Her fingers were warm.

Familiar.

Different.

We sat in silence.

Then I whispered:

"I want to try."

Elena looked at me.

"Really?"

I nodded.

"I don't know how."

She smiled through tears.

"Neither do I."

I laughed softly.

"Then we'll learn."

She squeezed my hand.

And for the first time in eleven years, I felt something I thought I'd lost forever.

Not the childhood I'd missed.

May you like

Not the mother I'd imagined.

But the possibility of a new beginning.
